If he is considered a little wacky by bible standards? or does he line up pretty squarely with Christianity?

Depends on your version of Christianity, I suspect.

My response was a serious one. No denomination would agree with everything he said or thought. There are things in Tillich that Roman Catholics, German Protestants, and American Evangelicals would not like.

If you would like a treatment of Tillich written by a fan of his, you can go here:
http://www.metodista.br/ppc/correlatio/correlatio06/paul-tillich-s-life-and-spirituality-some-reflections

As you read it, you will be able to see between the lines that Tillich did not quite fit anyone. Unfortunately, if no one likes you, you're probably not "mainstream" even if you do have a following of sorts. Those few though, are going to think you are mainstream.

I personally do not read Tillich much any more because he seldom backs up what he writes with Scripture.  It is much like reading the works of the philosophers.  Some of it may be good, some of it not so good, some of it just plain bad.  But it is up to you to search the Scriptures to see if He is square with them or not.

If someone is going to try to tell me about God, I would like to know where he gets his information.  That he is very smart and articulate just doesn't quite cut it.

Is he mainstream?  Probably not for the same reason.
