I just heard someone ask this, and wondered if anyone had an answer.

An amoeba lives 6-12 hours, and only eats things that are or were alive.   If an amoeba was the first creature, what did it eat?

Where did you hear the amoeba was the "first creature"?

From  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_evolution

Between 4500 and 2500 Ma The earliest life appears, possibly derived from self-reproducing RNA molecules.[4][5] The replication of these organisms requires resources like energy, space, and smaller building blocks, which soon become limited, resulting in competition, with natural selection favouring those molecules which are more efficient at replication. DNA molecules then take over as the main replicators and these archaic genomes soon develop inside enclosing membranes which provide a stable physical and chemical environment conducive to their replication: proto-cells.[6][7][8]

As I said I just heard someone ask this.

(fwiw, do a quick google and you'll hear this in a lot of places, none likely as scholarly as Wikipedia, though.)

I said I just heard someone ask this.  Can you read, or do you insult first, and ask questions later?

(fwiw, do a quick google and you'll hear this in a lot of places, none likely as scholarly as Wikipedia, though.)

You asked a question, I asked a question, how is that insulting?

Good answer chosenone...I think.   Confused Than again.... Pondering

Actually, my response was similar, but I don't fully understand such things.  That's why I posted it here--as an honest question, not as an opening for insinuations that I am stupid.

The person posing this, btw, has a doctorate and teaches classes at a major state university, but I don't always agree with the evidences he presents. For instance, he is a young-earther who believes Genesis 1 presents 7 24-hour days.  I am an English major who looks at literary forms and believes the days are not meant to be taken scietifically (and logically, given the day of the creation of the sun and moon, can't) and that the Earth is very old.

I did think this was an interesting question that deserved discussion, however.

In the end, it's part of a larger question about how organisms that require each other's existence can evolve independent of an overarching purpose.

Did you want a more scholarly response?

I guess you are not going to answer my previous question.

I did.  In detail even; everything except a name.

I've read your posting history, and I'm not going to be drawn in.

edit: if you're asking how a question can be insulting, 1, I can't believe you've never heard someone say an amoeba was the first organism, 2, again, your posting history leads that way, 3, you asked a question I had answered in the op, making me think you were making a point instead of expecting an answer.

I knew it. You made assumptions based on my posting history.

Yes.  When you make snide remarks about people's spelling and ask others if they've ever taken a science class, a certain patterm falls into place. The other two items I listed contribute as well.

Now, can we discuss the question?

V08 simply asked the question about where you heard it.  You had stated that you heard it.  You then pulled attitude, and then blamed 08.  Moderate yourself, Marc.

If I'm wrong, I apologize.  Now, can we get back to the topic?

It looks different today.  Sorry.  I'm sick of being sick and medicated.
