AOG and Christian Pacifism
« on: Fri Dec 09, 2011 - 02:35:01 »
"Prior to 1967, the Assemblies of God, along with the majority of other Pentecostal denominations, officially opposed Christian participation in war and considered itself a peace church.[10] The US Assemblies of God continues to give full doctrinal support to members who are led by religious conscience to pacifism." --from Wikipedia

A lot of people in our denomination probably don't know that.

I first learned of that about 1980 when I was doing research for my book on Christian Pacifism and read a Masters Thesis on it.

This is the 30th Anniversary of the book and it is now an ebook for Nook and Kindle where you can read some reviews and with the Kindle "Look Inside" feature, you can read my story.

Without reading your book, I know what happened the the AoG, the Devil came to church in the form of Dispensationalism.  This false doctrine breeds lies, death, war, and apostasy.   After 1948, this false doctrine started gaining ground, peaking in 1988.  It spread like wildfire in poorly grounded churches, like non-denoms and Pentecostal denoms.

Officially, the AoG position is "As a Movement we affirm our loyalty to the government of the United States in war or peace."  That's a cowardly way to say they're pro-war.

I do not know if you remember the US in 1967 but I do.

And the AG made the right choice. Pacifism is not inherently biblical nor is it all that wise in many situations.

In 1967 to be pacifist meant you were siding with the drugged out hippy anti-war in  Vietnam movement. And that also meant you were defacto siding with the athiest communist forces of North Vietnam.

I applaud the change, as I do their relaxing the strict forbiddence of alcohol, movies and television.

Pacifism sounds inherently Christ-like.  Blessed be the peacemakers.  Love your enemies.  Turn the other cheek.  Etc. The military aggression by the Israelites was by God's direction, unlike anything the US has been involved in.  And, that was also before the age of Grace.

The US lost the war against North Vietnam, so every day the US retreat was delayed, people on both sides pointlessly died.

America's wars have never benefited the American people, at least enough to cover the cost of the war.

The sad thing is that the imitation of Christ, which was at the forefront for early Christians, has been smothered by the worlds version of glory. And most American Christians will never even try to understand the Biblical position that was practiced for the first three centuries. Many will spend their time watching violent movies and never read a book about the early Christian position that is followed by very few Americans.
Christians are called to be the light of the world, not the sword of the LORD.
