In the interest of keeping posts reasonably short, I have started another for those who, like me, often miss out while trying to find where we last left off.

What was the foundational teaching in the Assembly of God?

Of course we believed the path of declaration and repentance, followed by water baptism, and baptism in the Holy Ghost with the evidence of seaking in other tongues. We also believed that the church of the Book of Acts was the church for today, and none of the things God did in that church had stopped happening today [eg healing, the gifts of the Spirit, etc].

But, was this all we ever talked about, and taught in our Bible teachings?

No, actually the foundational teachings that appeared in most churches was that example of Israel through the exodus from Egypt: "These things happened as examples to us, to keep us from falling." The tabernacle, and its types and shadows of the heavenly, and end times prophecy.

There was great emjphasis placed on teaching the milk of the word, under my dad's ministry, which took hold in other churches as well. The understanding was, if we are going to teach you to teach others, then it is important that we teach you the first principles of the doctrine of Jesus Christ. We cannot just expect you to know.

Of course, you understand, the beliefs of the fellowship would be covered in these teachings; they were foundational to the expression of our faith.

So our fellowship was not empty emotionalism, but was grounded in the word of God. We were not "sign seekers" as we have so often been labeled, but believed that signs followed the preaching of the word. There is no need to make them happen, God will do them by the Holy Ghost, and we saw many, but not all, which did not stop us from believing, as others have done.

Our motto: let this mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus.

Things have change.

Safe may we sleep beneath thy care,
Though banish'd, outcast and reviled -
Maiden! hear a maiden's prayer;
Mother, hear a suppliant child!
Ave Maria!
