Why do Baptists make it a point to say they're the first Baptist Church in any given town? Why do they care about that?

Why do Baptists make it a point to say they're the first Baptist Church in any given town? Why do they care about that?

There are no theological differences. This was simply a naming convention common to early American settlement. Whenever a Baptist church was established for the first time in a new town, it would designate itself “First Baptist of (new town’s name).” Occasionally, although less often, the next Baptist church to open in the town would call their church “Second Baptist.” Hence, when you see a church named “First Baptist” today, it simply means it was the first Baptist church in that town.

This naming convention was also popular among other denominations, including Methodist and Presbyterian.

So I would suspect that it had something to do with a church  opening and expecting growth or a need for another in another part of town.

I don't know that they do.  Many Baptist groups don't use such terminology.

We have a First Baptist and a Second Baptist and a gaggle of other names, usually neighborhood or street names.

Methodists and Presbyterians have a First but I haven’t heard of a Second.

Where I was born and grew up we had a 1st, 2nd and 3rd Presbyterian Church.

Population of a little more then 25,000 in 1950.

Our church was the 2nd Presbyterian... which became The Church of the Covenant in 1960.

Washington PA has a 1st Baptist and then many others with names like Abundant Life Baptist, Friendship Baptist, Legacy Baptist among others. Nut not a 2nd Baptist.

There are multiple "Baptist" denominations.  There are also plenty of different doctrinal beliefs as well.

Avraham Poraz, Israel's interior minister, today [2004-10-13] issued a half-hearted statement condemning an increase in attacks on Christian clergy. Poraz urged Jews to "stop the repeated attacks on the religious minority."

A few weeks ago, a senior Greek Orthodox clergyman in Israel attended a meeting at a government office in Jerusalem's Givat Shaul quarter. When he returned to his car, an elderly man wearing a skullcap came and knocked on the window. When the clergyman let the window down, the passerby spat in his face.
The clergyman prefered not to lodge a complaint with the police and told an acquaintance that he was used to being spat at by Jews. Many Jerusalem clergy have been subjected to abuse of this kind. For the most part, they ignore it but sometimes they cannot.

What does your post have to do with the First Baptist Church?

Why do Baptists make it a point to say they're the first Baptist Church in any given town? Why do they care about that?

IT most likely makes them feel important before men, but God takes no notice of such things. He is looking at the HEARTS of men not what is on the sign in front of a worship place. Who cares about Baptist, Pentecostal, Catholics, SDA, Latter Day Saints, Church of Christ, Church of God, or HOME churches and a thousand more~God DOES NOT CARE! He looking at the HEARTS of men where he is TRULY worship in spirit and in truth!

John 4:23,24~"But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth."

NOT in Jerusalem where the temple of God was located, but God is looking for those who will worship him in spirit and in TRUTH. Men can glory in their OWN TEMPLE, but God cares less about what you belong to, or where you worship....he wants OUR HEARTS! I have never been inside of a FIRST Baptist church, or a church of Christ, or a Pentecostal church, and have NO DESIRE to start now. But what I have I give to the Lord.....my heart, and its affections belong to him~ yea, ALL I have is his. He knows that I lie not.

Turn the other cheek is probably the right response.

I wonder if spitting back and saying "That tastes like the ham sandwich I had for lunch" would stop the spitting or just escalate into violence.  I read that buses in Jerusalem started hiding some pork in the bus as a deterrent to Muslim bombers who did not want to touch pork at the moment of their deaths.
