Another outside inquiry.
« on: Wed Aug 07, 2013 - 17:17:13 »
I've been searching the origins on the phrase (not the teaching or concept, but the actual phrase)

Baptism as an act of obedience.

Does any Baptist know who coined the term? It's been very hard to track down when that phrase came into use or who first expressed it in that way.

I haven't found it in the reformers writings, nor in the Westminster or London Confessions, Jonathan Edwards, Charles Spurgeon, Charles Finney, or Billy Sunday.

Any thoughts?

Thank you.

The earliest record I've found so far is Billy Bright.

Not a clue.

We believe that primarily it is an entrance rite into the priesthood of every believer.

Secondarily it is what Jesus & all apostles did.

Symbolic of death to life in Christ with a good concience thirdly.

I understand.

I know it started being said at some point. It may not be recorded who came up with the phrase.
I was successful though at tracking down the origins of the phrases "Receive Jesus..." and "Accept Jesus..." (as savior). But it took me a while.
I am hoping to be successful with this.

I'd be really surprised if Bill Bright was the first to say baptism is an act of obediennce.
