I fellowship at a conservative Baptist congregation. Doctrinally, I am Reformed with Baptist convictions concerning the mode of baptism and the liberty of conscience that is enshrined in Baptist heritage.

I do not like to call myself a "Baptist" but rather a Christian because I do not have a strict sense of parochialism. I have served as a deacon and elder in Pentecostal. Baptist and Presbyterian congregations. For me, the most important aspects of choosing a fellowship is its adherence to the Word of God as " final authority" and the manifestation of love that esteems the other person  better than ourselves ( see Phil. 2:2,3).

My dh and I are between churches right now - moving from a GARB church to probably an IFCA church. IFCA meaning Independent Fundamental Churches of America (aka I Find Christ Adequate). GARB meaning General Association of Regular Baptists (aka General Association of Rebellious Baptists).

The GARBs are similar doctrinally to the IFCA folks; I really haven't found any noticeable differences. They both tend to be 4 1/2 point Calvinists, not charismatic, congregational in structure. I was raised IFCA; we were taught to keep our hands folded during services to keep them from raising (okay, I'm joking - sort of)! Of course, things are a bit different these days; services are more informal, so some folks do raise their hands. I don't; it seems so *charismatic* (gasp!). I've heard us referred to as the "frozen chosen"; compared to some other denominations (Southern Baptists?), I suppose we might seem that way.

I love that song... "Nothing But the Blood"...   Only, we kinda sang it "Rockin" when I was in the A/G choir.   ::amen!::

What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Refrain

Oh! precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

For my pardon, this I see,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
For my cleansing this my plea,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Refrain

Nothing can for sin atone,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
Naught of good that I have done,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Refrain

This is all my hope and peace,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
This is all my righteousness,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Refrain

Now by this I’ll overcome—
Nothing but the blood of Jesus,
Now by this I’ll reach my home—
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Refrain

Glory! Glory! This I sing—
Nothing but the blood of Jesus,
All my praise for this I bring—
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

I believe also that only the blood of Jesus can save us, wash away our sins.

I would not equate the cleansing of the sinner by the blood of Christ, with participating in the Lord's Supper, which is a remembrance (1 Cor. 11.26).

That precious blood OF Jesus shed for us on the cross that we receive in Word and the washing of that word in the sacraments
of baptism and the Lords supper.

Yes, Z seems obsessed by a need to humour us. No problem, we need some of that on this forum

I didn't see where the insult was.  He merely referred to Baptist offshoots, which refers to those with historically Baptist roots .  That's not an insult against Baptists.

But, it's possible that you didn't know the terms or the context of what he was talking about.

I'm a Southern Baptist, was saved in a Southern Baptist Church, Received a vision in a Southern Baptist Church and surrendered to the ministry in a Southern Baptist Church. Still, I do not agree with every doctrine especially that people who are saved in other churches that desire to become members must submit to re baptism. Baptist do not believe that water baptism has any part in salvation so why require it. It would suffice for the people to confess Jesus as savior.  There are differences in Southern Baptist Churches. Those in the south east are more Pentecostal than those in the south west. I have ministered for 44 years.

BroBrent,

I am new to the Southern Baptist Convention but my borther-in-law (my best friend) just retired from a career as an SBC preacher in Missouri and Iowa and I have several feiends that are longtime SBC preachers.

I am sure you are speaking from your experience with SBC churches in your area or state and I can only speak of the churches I know and the preachers I know and discuss religion with frequently but, I agree with you about the necessity for baptism by new members.  The SBC strengthened my belief in grace through faith but when I decided to become a member of the church and went through the meeting with the church deacons and confessed my faith they said that I should get baptized again, by immersion, even though I had been baptized as an infant in the Lutheran church.  Of course, I had no problem with this because I love the Lord and wanted to show my faith by baptism.  My only difference than my friends in our church is that I believed in Jesus from about the age of four and believed in Him as my Lord and Saviour from that time.  My best friend could track his saving from 12:00 pm on Sunday, March 23, 1957 (I'm being facetious but that is the way all my Baptist friends spoke of when they were saved and it kind f became a joke with me.

I agree that I don't see the necessity for a baptism for salvation or for a person baptized in another Christian church to be re-baptized again just because they changed denominations.

I would love to hear the story of your vision sometime.

It was at the age of five. We were having a week long revival. just a child i was sitting wth a friend Dale Hall who decided at the invitation to go foreward and speak to the evangelist, he asked if i would go with him. I really didn't know anything about what was happening yet i went with my friend. I sat on the first pew while dale and the evangelist discussed salvation. Whe finished with my friend he turned his attention to me and asked me if i had any intentions and i said no. At that time he laid his hand on my shoulder and immediately i had a vision of the crucefixion of our Lord.  I can not say if it was in my mind but it appeared as i would say a movie and from that time i have known the truth of the sacrifice of the Lord. I can not remember a time when i ever doubted in God. I'm reminded of this one thing, to whom much is given, much is required. also, more blessed are those who have not seen and believe.

Wow, that sent a chill up my spine.  My story is almost the same but people in these forums have told me I couldn't have been saved at such a young age.  My earliest memory of Jesus is when I was 4 years old and in Sunday School.  I was Lutheran and our pastor was talking to me about Jesus and asked me if I knew who He was.  I said "Yes, God, and He died for me."  He said "Why did He die for you?" and I said "He died for my sins."

Now, as far as I'm concerned I was saved because in my heart I believed in Jesus and I confessed my belief with my mouth.

The man that led me to know I was saved, though I now believe I was saved before he came to me, said that in Sunday church at four years old he was so convicted in his heart to accept Christ he went to the altar alone and unnoticed at the end of services. He is still one of the greatest witnesses of God nearing eighty now and having just lost his wife.

I am from a family of six. i have three older sisters. My father wanted a son, so he was determined to keep trying. My mother promised the Lord that if He would give her a son, she would dedicate him to the Lords service. I did not know this until after i surrendered to the ministry. I preached my first sermon at the age of 17. There were seven professions on that day and one of those was my father.  I do have some difficulty with the baptist theology as it pertains to the work of the Holy Spirit. The Baptist Doctrine is that when a person is saved he receives all that the Lord has for him at that moment. I believe that the scriptures teach the baptism of the spirit apart from salvation. Receiving the Spirit and being baptized in the spirit are two different things.

Joh 20:22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:

Ac 1:5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

John was filled with the Spirit from his mothers woumb but desired to be baptized by the Lord.

Lu 1:15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

Mt 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

Mt 3:14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?

I see nothing wrong with being Spirit filled and Spirit led, but too many Pentecostal churches put way too much emphasis on the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit points people to Jesus and not to Himself. Of course, God is a Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We can't leave one out and say He's not important. However, each of the Three has a different function, and the function of the Holy Spirit is to convict the lost of their need of a Saviour and point them to Jesus, to convict the saved of sin in their lives, teach, guide, and direct us toward being a mature and spiritual child of God.

Amen !
