I believe that Paul was a pretty bad guy before his conversion. I would say yes. If someone were "born again" then their previous life shouldn't matter.

Saul was the bad guy he was reborn(born again I guess) and became Paul.
This happened on the road to Damascus.  Saul was blinded.  Paul was given
   his sight.  GOD bless.

Saul/Paul was a Jew that was also a Roman citizen. His Jewish name was Saul, his Roman name was Paul. Before, during, and after his conversion, he had both of these names.

Baptists may or may not agree with me here but this is what i believe
Was it not st Paul the holy spirit inspired to write the qualification's of a overseer?

Look to see what those qualifications are . And you will have Gods answer

So many church's today look in the bible for application -------Men's practices -----rather than the clear doctrines themselves God has set forth.

if we followed men's practices than every sin the bible describes would be doctrine for the christian church to follow.

We should instead check with
Gods do and his don't do list. His clear teachings for his church on a particular  subject .

His TO DO AND NOT TO DO.

Anyone can become a preacher.  There are no qualifications listed in scripture whereby a preacher must be ordained and sworn to.

I am not a baptist-but I do believe that many baptists would agree that the scriptures give requirements for elders (pastors) which include not being divorced-But strictly speaking a 'preacher' is simply someone who preaches which could be done at rescue missions, street corners and in churches as an evangelist without pastoral qualifications or duties.

YES! Moses murdered and God used him to deliver the nation of Israel. Paul persecuted the early church equipped by the priests to put Christians to death yet Jesus called him to service and by him the gospel was preached to the Gentiles. If you have been called then you know by Gods mercy in forgiving YOU that the answer to your question is: YES! God chose the foolish things to shame the wise! Paul says, He serves as an example for those who would believe in the name of the Lord Jesus and be saved for he was a murderer and persecuted Jesus.

A specific application to the question would be King David. Who took a married woman in adultery and sent her husband into battle to be killed. Consequently Israel suffered punishment yet through David the Holy Spirit continued to proclaim the coming Messiah and King. God Bless.

Many churches and some denomination disqualify Christians for leadership within the church because of who they were and what they did before they became a Christian.  It ought not to be so, but sadly that's the way it is!

Christ qualifies us for leadership on the basis of who we are in Him and His anointing, not on the basis of who we were in the world.

I was wondering if a man in his past before coming to the Lord had devorced and remarried . . . could he become a preacher.

†. 1Tim 3:2 . . An overseer must be . . .the husband of but one wife.

The koiné Greek word for "overseer" in that passage is episkopos (ep-is'-kop-os) which just simply means a church officer; viz : a member of the board of directors; which includes, but not limited to, the senior pastor, the assistant pastors, and the deacons. There's more :

†. Titus 1:5-6 . .The reason I left you in Crete was that you might set in order what was left unfinished, and appoint elders in every town, as I directed you. An elder must be . . . the husband of but one wife.

The koiné Greek word for "elder" in that passage is presbuteros (pres-boo'-ter-os) which means : older; viz : a senior.

Elders are somewhat different than church officers. These guys  typically function as a church's Supreme Court and have the power to excommunicate not only rank and file pew warmers, but to even defrock the senior pastor himself if they discover something reprehensible in his conduct.

Anyway, I tend to think that the phrase "the husband of but one wife" means one wife at a time. If so; then those two passages have the distinction of being the only places in the entire Bible forbidding polygamy.

The stipulation is very narrow. It specifically regulates the marriages of only the heavies in church, so it would be wrong to use those passages to justify forcing monogamy upon the rank and file. However, if polygamy conflicts with the laws of one's state of residence, then of course the State has the final say in that regard. (cf. Rom 13:1-5)

So you're saying a preacher may not be unmarried?

There are three dots separating "be" and "the". Those indicate omitted words and punctuation. Below is the passage with the words and punctuation restored.

1Tim 3:2 . . An overseer must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife

BTW : 1Tim 3:2 and Titus 1:5-6 refer only to the marital status of overseers and elders. To my knowledge, there are no special passages pertaining to the marital status of  preachers.
