Number of Baptist Sects?
« on: Mon Feb 03, 2014 - 11:59:34 »
 I was wondering how many Baptist sects there are and the name of each and every one of them-what there distinctive doctrines are. Someone has quipped that for every teaching in Christendom, the Baptists have it covered. rofl

No telling.

It just stems from the Baptists being historically independent, with each congregation being responsible for itself before God. Many formerly Baptist churches are now even removing Baptist from names and just becoming independent evangelical congregations. Though in reality the Baptist are no different that any of the other independent congregations with more & more variations of doctrine as people become satisfied by the opinions of men.

Baptists become the butt of jokes as a result of regional & political bias after the War Between the States because Baptist was the historical dominant denomination of the South. No different that the bias of describing all Southerners as brain-dead, gapped-toothed, inbred, uncouth fools.

That said I understand what you are saying. I was raised in southern Baptists churches, but I no longer attend a Baptist Church. I don't attend because I changed, I haven't.  What was once my home church was turned from a solid, very effective, Bible preaching church into a Six-Flags over Jesus.

I've heard the difference between Northern Baptists and Southern Baptists is...

The Northern Baptist says there ain't no hell.

The Southern Baptist says the hell there ain't.

 ::lookaround::

I have no idea how accurate that is though.

There used to be a bunch of Church of Christ folk here but I think they've taken a Sabbatical leave.  If they were around you'd be getting a lot of replies to this.   By the way, I used to be in the Church of Christ and I know what you mean.   The Campbells were officially Baptists for 16 years.

This Wiki article presents a pretty large list of Baptist denominations.

Our cofc congregation has long been accused of being more like a Baptist church than a church of Christ. Just ask most Church of Christ congregation within 150 miles of us has formally disfellowshipped or letter whipped us.

The Church of Christ is a baptist sect.

Only in part. (the Alexander Campbell part) The other part is Presbyterian. (Barton Stone was a Presby pastor)  But to be entirely honest, Campbell's father Thomas was for a while also a Presby pastor.

There are many Baptist groups, they all agree on like 5 main things and if they do not agree on the others they separate. They have separated over how to take up money for missions, over Calvinism, over slavery originally. I do not agree with every single thing my church believes but I do believe close enough to over look our differences on one or two issues.
