subject pretty much sums up my question. I'm just curious if you have some philosophy on the off-ramp homeless? I call them "beggars" just cuz that's what they are right? I'm trying to figure out difference between Americas beggars and the beggars of other eras..is there a diff?
thanks

I probably would, but at the same times it depends. Do they seem like actual homeless? Do I got money in my pocket (most of the time I do not).

My thinking is if they choose to use that money to destructive means instead of edifying means, then that's on them. But if you had it in your heart to bless them, there's nothing wrong with that.

Urban areas in my state are starting to pass city ordinances against panhandling from city medians. Oklahoma City just passed the ordinance, and Tulsa is in the process.

Not anymore.

In my State it is illegal.

There is places to go for such people here.

Some of this type of people live very well off, better than a working person.

I went to New Zealand and they had bums hanging about swearing yelling out ranting and raving all the time, it made me not want to go out with my family just walking about the City.

I know of a bum like so, that owned the whole shopping centre and most of the main street but lived in a bus shelter with a shopping trolley full of his stuff etc, he was just mental person, rich and mental. ::takingphoto:: ::giggle:: ::frown:: poor bugger.

Only during the Lenten season will I give cash with no questions asked as part of my almsgiving. During the rest of the year my policy is to provide them with food, with that being either making them a sandwich like I usually eat, buying them a bag of groceries, or even a restaurant meal and all that is also further determined by how much time I have to do whichever. The reason I will never give cash outside of Lent is I do not want to subsidize any of their bad habits such as drugs or alcohol.

We don't have them on the on/off ramps in the city where I live.  There are a few lights in the city where I have seen them. Hubby might if he has cash.  I'm a woman driving alone, I don't open my window for anyone.

We should give freely, often, but also wisely. I had to learned this over the years, because I once gave too freely, without much wisdom used. I have learned that some rather beg than work.  Some mastered the system of how to ask and beg. Some beg just to get enough money to get the next hit of whatever they are salves to. I only now give to individuals that I can SEE has a handicap of some sort, just as the lame man at the gate of the temple in Acts 3:2,3. If I'm at Sam's, or Costco, and there is someone in a wheel chair with no legs, then I give liberally to such a person, because they are without proper body parts that allows them to work and meet their needs. If I go thru a drive through and see a young mother working whom I have reason to believe she is poor, (bad teeth, etc) then I give her a good tip. We should be liberal, but wise as a serpent. I refuse to give to men and woman who come up to me in parking lots giving me a sad story of running out of gas, etc. I call the police on such people, and report them. Beggars are the same all over the world I'm sure since we all came from one father and have the same corrupt heart.

Women should never open their doors to anyone, man or woman. Remember Ted Bundy? That's the way he got some of his victims. Playing upon the goodness of innocent woman. Sister you are never alone! There are multitudes angels camp out around you!

As some of you know I live in Asia. We have many real poor people here and we have many bums.
My travels have lead me into regions where families are literally living in holes in the ground, children are deprived of education and sent to the streets. Boys and girls selling themselves off.
People without limbs sitting on the sidewalk hoping they can get just enough money that day to buy themselves a bowl of rice.

I have stopped asking myself if me giving would be the right thing to do because when I ask myself the answer is always: No.
There always is a reason why not to give.

So now I just give because of two reasons:
- It is the act of giving that is the duty of a Christian
- I have been blessed with plenty and I do not miss what I give.

This is my advise to any Christian: Just give! Stop wondering if that what you give is spend the right way.
If you have $100 to give...give it away to someone who can use it more than you do.

If Christ would have given only to those who deserve it...none of us would have received.

God Almighty bless you for doing so.  Brother, here in America no one lives in holes, unless they themselves have chosen to do so, for whatever reasons, and there are many that could be named. The poor in America live very good in comparison to the rest of the world, overall considered. There is very little excuse as to why some beg here, because our government gives the poor help, more than some deserve, trust me, I know first hand. Yes, the poor will always be with us, but America is truly the land of opportunity if one would just put forth a little effort, then they can have a decent life, far above what you have described.  It did hurt me to read your post.

No, we do not give money, but we have been guilty of returning to them with a bag of fast food or groceries. ::smile::

I have given in the past to homeless charities and donated food to food banks for those who are struggling. I believe this will at least make sure that its the really needy and homeless who benefit. I dont give to anyone begging because there have been so many stories in the uk of people who do this who actually have homes and incomes but do it because they make a lot of money and its easier than working.

I never give to the beggers on the corner because they're always the same people just running a racket. I donate food to my local food bank. I pass by the local food bank on a daily basis, so I see the families walking in to get food. I see their faces. There's something about seeing them that keeps me motivated to continue donating to the food bank. I usually take my grandson with me to the grocery store when I shop for the food bank so he can pick out a few things that kids would like - instead of the same old canned corn or green beans.

This might not be quite the same thing, but there is a man near my home who sells newspapers at the traffic light.  He only does it Sat and Sun.   I like to give him a bottle of water if I have one with me.  When I have the cash, I'll buy a paper and throw in a few extra  dollars for him.

As far as beggers go, I typically do not give them money, but one time I did feel the need to dig all the spare change out of my ash tray (it's not used for ashes, just coins) and give it to a man on the corner.  Can't explain it really, just felt like I should at that particular moment.  Typically I save my spare cash for the  man selling papers, though.

At least he's trying. Selling things. Making some sort of effort.

I live in an area where a pan-handler is on just about every corner of major intersections. I have actually watched them change shifts and get into fights about their shifts. They hand over the sign they hold up to the next person. It's a total racket. I have given money and food occasionally to people who clearly were in need, but I stay away from pan-handlers.
