I am looking for a book for depression
« on: Fri Apr 29, 2016 - 20:41:01 »
Hi I am new here. I have an elderly friend who is a Christian. She confides in me though and for the last 2 years she has been very angry at God allowing such suffering to go on in the world, and for the last year she has suffered from depression after losing her 2 dogs (she is a huge animal lover).

Would anyone please recommend an excellent book list that would benefit her? She often says she doesn't like the saying that "if there was no evil then we wouldn't know what good was" so I'd like to avoid that kind of book. I was considering the book "When the Darkness Will Not Lift: Doing What We Can While We Wait for God--and Joy " By John Piper but to be honest I have not read much Christian literature.

I appreciate any/all suggestions and thank you in advance.

john 10 v 10

The thief comes only that he might steal and might kill and might destroy. I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly.

Its sad that she is blaming God for the bad things that happen. Death and suffering were never Gods plan. but they are satans plan.

This books looks very good and has many good reviews

Suffering and the Sovereignty of God. John Piper. He's a very readable author.

May I suggest the Holy Bible, and in particular the Gospels.

You see, depression is the result of being spiritually exhausted. We are supposed to upbuild our spiritual nature and retain it to help us cope through these sorts of problems and this can only be done if we listen to the teaching of Jesus Christ as accurately as possible. It's as if we have all this spiritual material whizzing through our minds and when this fails so does our mental strength. Our own age or health doesn't help because then we have to carry a heavy burden which is pulling at these spiritual strengths all the time but only Jesus offers prevention measures and restoration methods and anyway we need a righteous spirit as a resurrection tool in our future...in the meantime, we shouldn't be disheartened when nature bites us because nature is the way Almighty God has organised things.
