Hey guess what...I just happened to be listening to a wonderful CD right now that has a bunch of wonderful old hymns on it.  I would recommend that.  It is by Chris Rice, and the CD is called Peace Like a River: The Hymns Project.

Here are the songs that are on it:

It is Well With my Soul, Rock of Ages, O Freedom, A Mighty Fortress, Come Thou Fountain of Every Blessing, O Love That will not Let Me Go, Great Is Thy Faithfulness, Old Rugged Cross, How Great Thou Art, Before the Throne

Check it out online to hear samples of the songs if you can...usually if you do a search for the CD, they will let you listen to snippets of the songs before buying the CD.   Good luck!

Happy listening...

I will try to find you some internet radio that plays a lot of the old hymns -- I used to listen to Acappella Radio a lot, will have to see if my current computer is powerful enough to do it.

I will at least try to get you the URL to find it online.

OK, here it is: Totally A Cappella - Like No Other Radio Station On Earth

They have a very well-mixed playlist.  There will be some current stuff; there will be some things from the past 50 years; there will be some really old hymns, like 100, 200, 300 years old.  There will be choral style, quartet style, slightly orchestral and jazzy like the group "Glad", and really jazzy stuff like "Take 6" does.

You will find links all down the left side to hear various styles of music and various speakers.

Give that a listen and see what works for you.

I just clicked on this and a group was singing "Faithful and True", better known to most as the wedding march.

It brought me back to the time a friend of mine who had never been in a non-instrumental church came to a wedding with me at my fundie CoC.  When the vocal chorus began singing that song to bring the bride down the aisle, my friend got a truly amazed look on her face.  "You mean that song has WORDS?Confused?", she said.

OK, maybe not such a great story.  But hearing that station sure brought back memories.  Thanks.

Yes indeed that song has words!  Translated from the German, and so we've learned it a little bit differently in different places.  I've sung it -- a cappella, in 4-part harmony --  at weddings.

Here's some nice old stuff, culled from the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack:

Down In The River To Pray

Lonesome Valley

and "I'll Fly Away"

I think I know what you miss. So many of the old hymns were filled with such great theology it was like having sung a sermon when you finished singing all the verses.  I'm thinking of A Mighty Fortress; Fanny Crosby and Isaac Watts songs.  FWIW there is a young Irish couple that write modern hymns, Keith and Kristen Getty. They wrote The Power of the Cross and In Christ Alone. Their music is very much like the old hymns and worth checking out.

Yes, I love the old hymns; 'A mighty fortress' is a great one.

So are the hymns of Isaac Watts.

John 3.16 contains great theology, without doubt.

Read God's Word prayerfully every day; it's a joy and privilege.

If folks feel they must have TATTOOS, have you considered having faith related designs tattooed?

(And try vacationing in the South: plenty of sun, and some great churches down there!)

I tried that radio station link and all I got was a commercial. I don't have the patience to doink around with a commerical right now. Frowning Maybe I just caught the station at the right time? I'll try it again later.

I know what you mean, though, Walker - sometimes I miss the good old gospel songs, played the "right" way. I found some links to web sites that have midis of those traditionals and had a great afternoon one day building my own play list. I have about 200 songs on it - some of them are variations of the same thing.

Some of the radio stuff is just trash, though you can get some good ones.
