 Smile  This morning I was thinking of an old hymn that I used to hear occasionally as a child.  Only part I can remember is " On a hill far away stands an old rugged cross, an emblem of suffering and shame".  It occur ed to me that there was better prose.  that it could have more meaningful to have said suffering and glory, or triumph or victory or forgiveness.  But, then it would not have rhymed.  Wish I had the rest of the words to that old hymn.  Does anyone remember them?

It is "The Old Rugged Cross"

Here is a link to the song:  http://nethymnal.org/htm/o/r/oruggedc.htm

Here is a video of a lady singing this song:

He was despised and forsaken of men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; like one from whom men hide their face; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.  Surely our griefs He Himself bore, and our sorrows He carried; yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.  But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed.

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
The emblem of suffering and shame;
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain.

Refrain:

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it some day for a crown.

O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
Has a wondrous attraction for me;
For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above
To bear it to dark Calvary.

(Refrain)

In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
A wondrous beauty I see,
For ’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,
To pardon and sanctify me.

(Refrain)

To the old rugged cross I will ever be true;
Its shame and reproach gladly bear;
Then He’ll call me some day to my home far away,
Where His glory forever I’ll share.

(Refrain)

I do music programs in nursing homes.  I often ask the folks what their favorite gospel song or hymn is.  the number one answer I hear is "Amazing Grace."  The number 2 song I hear is "The Old Rugged Cross."  It is my personal favorite, not just because it is a beautiful song, which it is.  But I love it because if it weren't for that cross, we wouldn't have any reason to sing the other songs.  Without the cross, they wouldn't have any meaning.

God bless.
