Next Sunday is our youth minister's last Sunday with us and one of our men is going to sing "Thank You" by Ray Boltz.  Here's the question I have for you.  There is one statement in the song, talking about a Sunday School teacher, which says:

"Every week you would say a prayer before the class would start, one day when you said that prayer I asked Jesus into my heart".

As we know, that is not Christian Church/Church of Christ theology.  For those of you who come from the same background I do, have you sung that song and changed the words to make it fit our theological perspective?  If so what words did you use?  What words would you use if you were to do so?

Please don't turn this thread into another theological debate.  There are plenty of those happening now on the theology forum.

He was despised and forsaken of men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; like one from whom men hide their face; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.  Surely our griefs He Himself bore, and our sorrows He carried; yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.  But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed.

I couldn't hold a candle in a theology discussion anyway.. but would like to ask - isn't the song copyrighted and therefore should not be changed?  Or do some songwriters allow that within various churches.  (I really don't know; just offering a perspective).

Personally I feel the line is quoting what a young man is saying to another (as opposed to a line directed at the listeners), the bigger point being the impact a person can have on other's lives - so I would leave it.

Being non-IM CoC I have seen plenty of songs changed or blacklisted because they aren't 100% scriptural. In most cases I would say leave the song as is recognizing that songs are written by men who use poetic license and as Seeking said, don't mess with copyright.

Your case is more complicated because it involves a youth minister and therefore youth. Us old folks can handle lyrics that play loose and fast with scripture but a kid is more likely to think that songs have the same scriptural authority as the NT. Looking back, I kind of felt that way when I was 10 years old.

I am not familiar with the song but if I was in your shoes and really really wanted to use this particular song I would ignore copyright and change the words. Could you just leave out the offending verse or is this one of those modern praise songs that doesn't fit the verse-chorus-verse-chorus format of the good old songs? (Now I sound like one of the gray haired geezers)

Snargles, it would be very hard to leave that verse out of the song.  I'm still thinking about how to change the lyrics.  If anyone has a suggestion, please let me know.
