Adultery is when someone who is married is dating & having sexual relations with someone who is not their spouse.
Fornication is when two unmarried people have sexual relations.
Both of the above are displeasing to God and are considered sin.  Adultery is in God's top ten rules of "Thou Shalt Nots." (See the Ten Commandments.)

Personally, I think 12 years old is way to young to seriously date anyone.  Being friends is okay, but other than that, you're playing with fire with young emotions with adult consequences.

Kids should be allowed to be kids for as long as possible.  Childhood will never come again.  I wasn't allowed to date until I was 16, and that was only double dating.   My parents set these rules to protect me, and I respected them for it.

If you're dating someone seriously, (something I wouldn't advise at such a young age),  the Golden Rule is the best one to follow.  "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."  If you would get upset at your girlfriend dating someone else, then you shouldn't date anyone else either while you two are in a special relationship.   If you break off your steady relationship, then you should be free to date anyone you like.  It's just a question of integrity and always trying to do the right thing.  As long as you are not involved in a sexual relationship, you are not sinning.

Dating more than one person is not a sin in itself, especially when you're trying to find someone with whom you are most compatible.  I don't think it's wise to tie yourself down to just one person, when you are so very young.  Another bit of advice:  everyone you date should be considered a potential marriage partner.  Don't date anyone who lacks morals and who doesn't believe as you do in Jesus Christ.   If you did, you just might end up falling in love with someone who can make your life totally miserable and lead you into sin, yet you'll find it hard to break off the relationship.

Ask what would Jesus do in every situation to help keep you on track in your relationships.  That's about the best advice anyone could give.

Hope something I've said here helps answer your questions, BB.

There's nothing and nobody to "cheat" on if you are not in a serious, marriage-bound relationship, in my opinion.

And certainly there should not be any sexual faithfulness to worry about if you aren't married!

When you're young, best to a) not be totally tied up in a romantic relationship anyway, and b) to be a good friend and apply the Golden Rule and "What Would Jesus Do?" to all situations.

Really, that's good adivice for everybody at any age.

Trueblue steered you well.
