Race and the Church: Getting Beyond the Handshake

"In a city split by racial wounds, Detroit area church leaders endeavor to promote reconciliation, cooperation through regular fellowship, joint ministry."

Sundays not Segregated at Florissant

“My information is that Florissant has always been a racially diverse congregation,” said Mike Root, the minister for four years.

“It has been intentional, but it is also the result of the demographic of our community,” said Root, who is white. “I have never been with a church that so closely matches the true makeup of its community as Florissant does.”

Leaders Tackle Questions on Race and the Church

Four church leaders who serve racially diverse congregations responded to a series of questions from The Christian Chronicle.

Sounds like progress.    I agree

But after reading all of the articles, I'm still not terribly impressed.  I's not so hard to mix with the other church for an hour or two on Sunday morning, once in a while.  But to work toward a multiracial church in one place -- where everyone mingles every week -- that would be even better, and a real test of everyone's openness.

This was a very good article and I was was very pleased to see discussion on a topic that I am just puzzled by. Frankly, I am always astounded at how we as a community of faith do come together with congregations more often, race or not. I am glad this is put out on the front page.
