c of C's in Montgomery, AL?
« on: May 06, 2004, 04:12:21 PM »
Hey, I have to be in Montgomery, AL, for an AF (Air Force) chaplaincy training 'thing' this June, and was wondering:  Are there grace-centered c of Cs there?  If so, what are they, where are they?  I'm practicing my Campbellite ecumenism, by 'crossing the aisle', as a DoC who visits the churches of the Movement; so, any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

kebecer1,
There is a wonderful congregation that is very grace centered in Montgomery.  The Landmark Church of Christ is the name of the congregation.  They have really grown over the past few years since changing their direction to a gc focus.

Here is their web site: http://www.land-mark.org/

Feel free to PM me if you want more info. I've got a number of friends there.  I live about 50 miles away from this congregation and if it was a bit closer I'd be going there myself as would probably the majority of our congregation.

Thanks, Rocketman!  I will indeed check them out, on the Web, and look them 'up', when I get to Montgomery.  I might PM you, too, in a few weeks.  I leave 2 June.  It will be interesting for me to take off my own (prejudiced/preconceived) notions of c of C worship, and just worship w/ God's people.  It's weird--I have been able to do that w/ c of Cs abroad; I guess it's just time to do that stateside.  Again, thanks; and you'll hear from me!   :talkingonephone:

Definately check out Landmark.  My cousin preaches there and most of the staff are friends of mine.  They are absolutely a "GC" church of Christ.

Keb,

You could take a walk on the wild side and attend a service at an "anti", as in anti-institutional, church of Christ. Perry Hill Church of Christ is one that I know of.

I will check out Perry Hill, too.  Just how near is David Edwin Harrell to those environs?

He is about 50 miles away and lives in Auburn at least part of the year.  But I believe he travels quite a bit and isnt on campus but at certain time due to research etc he is conducting.

Adam,

Unless things have changed at Landmark, I'm assuming your cousin is Buddy.  I went to college with him and Curtis and Dane - quite a family for sure!

I saw Buddy about 2 years ago up here in NC - he was the featured speaker at a youth rally in Statesville.  It was good to see him and catch up on him and his family.

For kebercer1 - I would concur with the opinions others have expressed here regarding Landmark - from talking to Buddy and visiting their web-site, it is certainly not your more traditional church of Christ.

At present, I am Air Nat'l Guard; active duty is too hectic and too 'random' for my family needs.  Although, our unit is headed for deployment next year.....  Hope that answers your question.   ???
