If ANYONE is afflicted they should NOT have their emotions USURPED:
James 5:13 Is ANY among you afflicted? let him pray. Is ANY merry? let him sing psalms.
He is NOT attending ekklesia or synagogue. Leave the person alone. He does not need a MENTAL OVERDOSE in either case.
The Greek world was considerate enough that they would not subject everyone to the same kind of music which they understood as having ONLY entertainment value. Probably 25% of your congregation is on some antidepressant in order to SURVIVE things like "worship services" replaced for Christ's "school of the Bible." Music INDUCES endorphins and other thingies like a DRUG HIGH. That induces the effects of Fight, Flight or Sexual feelings (with or without machines).
Act 16:25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises [hymned] unto God: and the prisoners heard them.
There is only ONE word there.
If you are in prison then it is ok to HYMN to God. We do that all of the time. There are only a few HYMNS in the BOOK of Psalms and these were not repeated over and over week after week.
That the prisoners heard them does not mean that they were holding a GATHERING or ASSEMBLY which is the SYNAGOGUE word in Paul's writing. When they put you in prison for stealing the Words of Jesus and using Twila Paris as a bait and switch then you can ALSO use your guitar without metal strings.
You can sing all you wish but when the DIRECT COMMAND is to SPEAK using "that which is written" for the purpose of TEACHING those assembled, you cannot SING and SPEAK at the same time.
SPEAK is a direct command singING and makING are present participles and are both IN the heart and directed TO GOD and not to the AUDIENCE.
One of the Hallel HYMNS was used at Passover. At this time after the Feast of Unleavend Bread
Mat 26:30 And when they had sung [hymned] an hymn [hymn], they went out into the mount of Olives.
They didn't preach, take up a collection, make announcements, sing Fanny Crosby or Twila Paris. They simply RECITED one of the HYMNS and WENT out. Now, if this is the patternism for a "worship service" I would attend.
ONE OF THE HALLEL HYMS WOULD HAVE BEEN USED The Hallel through the generations, on specific occasions: Pesachim 117a Hallel requires a full stomach and a satisfied spirit: Taanis 25b-26a The reading is beloved to the people, and so they listen closely: Megillah 21b The Hallel as an Institution of the Prophets, to use to pray for salvation from danger: Pesachim 117a
Reciting Hallel for a miracle which occurred outside of Israel: Megillah 14a Saying the Hallel daily is blasphemous: Shabbos 118b
SUNG as in "sang and clang using complex harmony" was NOT what they did. Singing was speaking a poetic or spiritual text. None of the Bible is metrical and you cannot sing it as SANG and puff and blow if your life depended on it.
There was no such thing as congregational singing in a tuneful sense until after the Reformation. Psalms had to be REWRITTEN and radically changed to make singing possible. That is why I know that THEY did not MAKE MUSIC.
When the Psalms were RECOMPOSED that mean ONLY unison singing. That fits Paul's direct command to use "that which is writteN" and use ONE MIND and ONE MOUTH.
Simple lexicons are not good enough to defend you against NOT using that which is written, NOT using the Word of Christ.
Humneo in Prose, celebrate in a hymn, commemorate, 2 .descant upon, in song or speech, II. tell over and over again, harp upon, repeat, recite, rehears, Proverbs 1:20, sing, recite the form of the law, Id.Lg.871a: chant X.Ages.11.2 Gave Thanks
AGAIN: The Bible is not metrical and it would be impossible for SING at that time to mean SING in the modern sense. The issue is WHAT did people do when they SYNAGOGUED? They read and learned a portion of the Word. What was the purpose: it is never called a WORSHIP SERVICE. Disciples attend EKKLESIA to LEARN THE BIBLE.
