2 monitors or 1?
« on: Wed Dec 25, 2013 - 19:47:49 »
Hello all,

Merry Christmas to my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ!  I am posting this quick question up because I am currently in the process of building a home office while I am off on for the holidays.  I just wanted to know how many of you have worked with an ultra wide monitor?  So instead of purchasing 2 monitors, I am looking to purchase a single ultra wide monitor (it is this one here: [link removed).  Is it an effective alternative to a dual monitor setup?  I have used dual monitors before, and I am looking for a change, which is why I am looking for alternatives.  Thank you in advance and God bless!

Two monitors vx one extra wide one?

Two is better.

Its just how our eyes work.   Split screen just doesn't work as well for most people.

Focus & concentration being what they are.

I have one and I want to buy the same one to get dual when I move.

I'd say that it depends on what you do. If you play a full-screen game (or anything that takes the full screen), then I'd get dual, so you can go back and forth easily. If you like having windows float around unlocked like most Macs, then you could probably do with a really big widescreen, since windows aren't maximized.

An ultra-wide does not have the same width as 2 x 1080P screens and does not allow 2 applications to run in full screen mode.
I do a lot of design/programming where the layout of the application (user preferences) are important. Usually I use one screen as the design screen, and the other as the result screen.
This would not work on an ultra-wide.

Unless you use your screen for watching movies, I don't think an ultra-wide is an improvement.

I have a monitor that runs at 1680 x 1050. 2 screens would be really good but I don't have the deskspace.

As an software developer (web app, android, and client side) two monitors does the trick. And they are both ultra wide. Do you know why that is?  Real estate. Yep the more space to have multiple windows up at a given time. Sure you can Alt-Tab through your apps, but when you have so much open at one time, its nice to see it all.

I prefer three widescreen monitors, not two.  With two I always feel like I have to angle them both towards my head and so I am never looking straight ahead at one of them.  With three I can have my main monitor front and center.

First world problems I guess.
