The importance of having a VPN
« on: Wed Sep 12, 2018 - 09:56:07 »
Mods will notice that my IP shows 'London' when really I am located somewhere in Malorca and the reason I've been using a Virtual Private Network is because it keeps my daughter and I safe when online. This means when we connect to the network through a VPN, the data is kept secured and encrypted. In this way, the information is away from the hackers’ eyes.

Think of having your own rabbit burrow. That is how effective having a VPN is as it renders me virtually invisible against phishers, all sorts. Especially when sat in a caff and using their WiFi. Or, at an airport where even one's wallet could be scanned by a thief intent on stealing one's identity, so having a VPN installed on your device will protect you for being spied on.

VPNs adds security against cyber attacks (like ransomware), and provide an effective method to internet users to safeguard their online privacy and security, helping combat the anti-privacy bill and surveillance.

The maintence cost of VPN is very low. My daughter has an iPad and it's covered with the added safety. (I also have added a net nanny to keep her extra-safe when online to guard against her happening upon dubious sites).

Here is a factual website that gives 10 reasons to use a VPN for private web browsing. Having checked it through, it does not advertise any particular brand, so use it to gen up.

Stay safe online!  ::smile::

I rarely use my VPN service, mostly when I'm trying to get around my workplace infranet security settings. All of my mobile devices are set on location and I use them as such as I move from place to place, VPNs will not allow apps to work correctly when switching frequently between mobile data and wifi.

Anyhow, yes VPN's are safe but the added cost is difficult to warrant for most people, and the free versions are extremely slow and problematic, add to that I'm not a paranoid person that worries about internet hackers, they are welcome to come browse my estate  ::crackup::

BTW, your IP address does indeed show you are in London.

Thank you so much for sharing this because I was worrying if I hadn't posted in the correct forum, while aware of keeping away from sneaking advertising..

I have to use a VPN because of running a business, more so because of the high gem value and precious metals so any transactions go through my highly secure site. The risk of hackers in Mallorca - or anywhere across Eurpose is awful, and much comes across from Russia so my IT man warns. He set me up with a fine VPN that doesn't log one's browsing history. So I suppose really, buying a subscription to a VPN service will depend on one's person requirements.

Thanks Alan for mentioning my IP. That's reassuring because my VPN auto logs on once my laptop is switched on. Sometimes it diverts to Spain or France and then I end up getting adverts for all sorts. But I choose 'London' because their servers there are much faster. And that's the other reason why I like a VPN. Its server is usually much, much faster!

Terrible tunderstorms right now. I must log off.
Again - thank you so much and God Bless!  ::smile::

You wait til October! Then it'll be fireworks alright!  rofl But last weekend we had over 200 strikes a minute. It was like a war zone outside. I pulled the shutters to and locked them. The thunder was violent, but we're rigged with lightning conductors everywhere!

Yes, good to stay safe.

Good also to know what criteria are being applied to stay safe.

Thanks because we travel a lot when I'm on business, and airports can potentially be disaster areas. I have an RFID blocker wallet as does Peggy and we both use a VPN not only on our tablets, but also when using our phones. The amount of identity theft that goes on across Europe is ghastly. One can never be too safe.

Seems like you have taken what precautions you can - and more than most people, even...

I can't give details, but my bank alerted me to an attempt of identity theft. It was my banker who recommended a VPN, so I contacted my IT man and went from there.

Oh and while I remember, if you ever come to visit Lisbon in Portugal - watch out for pickpockets!

Oh I've been to Lisbon!  ::smile:: You often get pickpockets in big port cities, anyway...

We were 'phoned by our bank about someone who tried to use our credit card number...

Good bank you have!

I am reminded of Jesus' invaluable words from the Amplified Bible, Matthew 10: 15-17: "Behold, I am sending you out like sheep in the midst of wolves; be wary and wise as serpents, and be innocent (harmless, guileless, and without falsity) as doves."

I think tomorrow, that is going to be written then pasted onto my workshop wall.

Good to remember!  ::smile:: Great verse there! and believers are of course lights in a dark world. (I love both John's Gospel and John's First Epistle for their references to light shining in darkness.)
