Cut and paste blocking?
« on: Sun Jun 10, 2007 - 19:21:49 »
Is it possible for web site owners to block the ability of visitors to copy text from their web page?

When I receive the latest warning letter about whatever it is that people are up in arms about at the moment, I check it out on Snopes.com.  In the past I have copied a small part of their text into a reply email and included a link to the page.  It's my understanding that this is what is meant by "fair use".  However, the last time I tried to do this I couldn't copy anything off of any page at the Snopes web site.

Has anyone else run into this problem?

There is some Java you can put in your web page to keep people from copying text off your site.  I have used it occassionally, but only for copywrited material.

and you can get around it by looking at the source code

It is also possible (if memory serves...) to lock a pdf file so that you cannot capture text from it (without breaking the document).

If the text is actually a picture, you may not be able to copy the text from the picture either (unless you have conversion software).

Okay, so will someone try this for me?  Go to http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/dollarcoin.asp and try to cut and paste a portion of the text.  Any of it.  I can't copy anything from the body, the sources, or even the line that says, "The URL for this page is ..."

As far as I can tell, this is the only site that I have this problem with.
