What browser are you using?

Sounds like you have malware or a virus.

Do you use Dropbox? That local address link is pointing to a folder with an executable (.exe) file inside of it, and it looks like it's already running in the background.

Run MalewareBytes, and SuperAntiSpyware (if you have the latter) and a full depth A/V scan.

TC... I am running Google Chrome.  I used to use Firefox but it got very bad for me when Windows 10 was forced on me.

Alan, I did run

Malwarebytes ( paid for)

Super Antispyware  ( the free vwession)

C Cleaner

and
System Mechanic....

Seems like one of those did get rid of the pop up but I will run a full A/V scan.

Yes, I use dropbox.

Primary reason is because I have 3 laptops in different areas of the house and when I want access
to a file or pic, depending on where I am I don't want to have to run around looking for it.

I have never been able to get anything to sync properly... but if you advise eliminating drop box
I will do it in a heartbeat....

Did you add any Google extensions?  Sometimes those can be a source for ads as well.

Nothing recently.

Back when I went with Chrome I did Ad Block Plus.
But no other extensions...

But since I did all those scans earlier, so far so good. If it is a virus, or malware it seems to be hiding, so only
time will tell if it pops up again.

It seems like every time I let a paid something or other go to the free version that something like this will happen
making me want to go spend money again on something I am not sure i should be spending money for.

I do have a question for you, or Alan or anyone else with knowledge of these things.

Are you familiar with the new program that IOLO ( System Mechanic) is going to launch in a month or so?

Here is that link.

Anyone think it would be worth it?

According to this forum discussion, it appears to be a problem with Malwarebytes that showed up a few days ago.

Synchronizing with Dropbox is an automated process running in the background where data is exchanged between Dropbox and your PC.
Malaware seems to recognize this process as an unauthorized access to your PC, hence the action is blocked.

Either you add Dropbox to the safe sites list in Malaware, or you remove Malaware and go for another application.

But before you do any of these, I suggest you uninstall Malaware and Dropbox and do a fresh reinstall of both applications.

In the forum discussion I linked, some people apparently found that whitelisting Dropbox was not enough; they also had to do something about the specific port listed in the Malwarebytes message.  Just FYI.

I've never had MalwareBytes sound the alarm at my dropbox folder, or my Google Drive or OneDrive for that matter.

That pop up window only happened on the one laptop.

Not on this one and I have not checked the 3rd one as it is rarely used, but I will soon.

Since I ran  scans on Malwarebytes,  Super Antispyware , C Cleaner,  System Mechanic, and Avast ( my AV) that seemed to do the trick)

I also did email Malwarebytes to report and will let you know what they say when I get a reply, if I do.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

You stopped me from doing  ::destroyingcomputer:: yesterday  rofl but today is not over. ::doh:: ::pondering:: ::whistle::

I have always referred to these programs as "snake oil", they really do nothing more than you're able to do yourself, and at the same time run in the background unnecessarily using resources and annoying you with constant pop-ups about your systems "health". Admittedly, it's been years since I have tried any system mechanics, so they may work better than they did at one time. Best to look at user reviews since I'm a terrible person to ask, I don't even run an AV on my Windows rig.
