Finding WEP Key on wireless router
« on: Sat Mar 10, 2007 - 16:53:38 »
I recently had to do a restore disk on my laptop, thus wiping everything out including my WEP Key setting for my Linksys Wireless-G router. I was a genius when I set it up on my home PC and didn't write down the WEP Key Code.  ::cryingtears::
Is there anyway to retrieve that code, or reset it to a new WEP Key?

Thanks.......I just love this particular forum because I don't have to talk to someone in India for three 4-1/2 hours to solve a problem.  ::frown::

Blessings,
Jaime

I looked at the back of my router (also a linksys).  There is a button on the back of your router called a "reset button."  Hold that in for 30 seconds,  which should reset your passwords and all other info.  Then you will need to set it up again.

There are free tools that can "sniff" the packets from your router and maybe crack the WEP key.  It's probably quicker to just reset it, unless you want the educational opportunity of learning more about encryption.

With most routers the WEP key is the numbers printed on the thingy with the serial number.

Are you confusing the WEP key with the MAC address, Arkstfan?  I haven't seen a WEP key printed on a router, and the key(s) is/are changeable anyway.

Personally, I'd rather use WPA than WEP, as it is more secure, but my Palm won't support it, so I have to stay with WEP for now.  I figure having any lock on the door is better than leaving the door wide open, as any war drivers are generally looking for easy pickings.

The default WEP key on 2Wire routers is printed on the bottom.

I pushed the reset button on the back and now I have "unsecured" access. To set it up again as a secured network router, will I need to go through my desktop which is hard wired into the router? Or can that be done through my laptop in setting up a new security key.?

Sorry for the stupid questions. You guys are great.

I saw nothing printed on the bottom of my router except the serial no. and a MAC no. right below the serial no.

One more stupid question. What is the downside of keeping the router "unsecured"? Can a hacker really get into our computer and do harm? Everywhere I go, the airways are filled with unsecure networks, but rather weak strength.

Jaime,

I's suggest you do it through the hardwired connection.  If you do it over the air, as soon as you set it, you'll lose your connection.  If you're like me, you'll then type the wrong WEP into your laptop, and spend an hour trying to figure out why you can't reconnect.

To your second connection, as long as your systems are properly firewalled, there's not a huge risk of direct harm, otherwise places like Panera wouldn't do it.  The real risk is that someone will bog down your network with heavy downloads, affecting your speed, and possibly violating your ISP agreement regarding sharing the connection.

Worse, if that  person is downloading something illegal, you could find all your equipment suddenly sitting in the local FBI office while the sort things out.  I believe that's a violation of due process, but the FBI doesn't generally listen to what I believe.
