Going to make a mess
« on: Sat Mar 10, 2007 - 15:27:52 »
Getting ready to turn my power pc iMac into a dual-boot OSX/ubuntu linux machine.

If you don't see me online for a few weeks you know what happened wasn't pretty.

LOL.  I'm typing this from an Ubuntu laptop, though it isn't a Mac.  I initially installed it in January, replacing Gentoo.  It was an incredibly easy installation, and everything simply worked.  Ubuntu is my new favorite Linux distro.  Have fun with it!

Wasn't fun because I was shooting for a dual boot system and it was a mess trying to get it to properly install on the partition.

Saw enough from the CD booted version to know that when I've got a few bucks to part with that it would be a great way to rehab an older machine or save some money on a new machine by not paying for Windows.

Only thing I really didn't like was that the iMac uses the operating system to regulate fan usage, Umbuntu wouldn't do that ran the fan full blast all the time and it wouldn't properly shut down the iMac on exit.

I suspect minor details like that aren't an issue on x86 architecture machines.

I like how the default background is the same as the one in OS X except brown instead of blue.

Just want to add. The software that ships with Umbuntu is outstanding.

As usual?

You're right that the power and fan control works fine on an x86 system.  I could never get the system to hibernate when I used Gentoo, but it works like a charm with Ubuntu.

I'm already a fan of OpenOffice (I use the Mac port, NeoOffice) and Firefox so it's not that different of a world. I feel like I'm on my office Win XP machine because all the window buttons are on the right instead of the left.

There are window styles in Linux that more or less emulate Mac OS.

I'm dual booting between OS X and Ubuntu linux... finally  ::clappingoverhead::

So I've got only a few hours experience.

If you've got a machine that won't run OS X effectively, you can likely extend the useful life with linux. If you want OS X and linux on there, I'm not the one to ask. I just made good back-ups on my firewire drive and took the attitude that I'd mess with it until it worked with no fear of breaking anything.

Interesting. I am going to have to check this out more.

No, the machine I have runs the OS fine, but it's slow and old. I've been thinking perhaps to reconfigure the hard drive and upgrade the OS and see if I can increase performance.

I'd like to make it wireless but never bought my internal piece from Apple and of course it's discontinued now. Looking into making it wireless as well, somehow.

This is all very interesting.

You could dump your Mac and get a PC.   ::smile::

That's like trading an Audi A6 for a Pacer.

Well, I said it knowing I'm downstairs on the PC, and that I'd take that Pacer just for fun. ::smile::

You can likely get a usb wireless set-up.

If you buy a new Mac, you will have a PC with a Mac OS.

And one that runs faster than a windows machine with the same processor.

That's what my daughter did, and it works fine for her.

BTW, Arkstfan, I just ordered a refurbed widescreen laptop from TigerDirect, so maybe I'll toy with dual-booting it with Ubuntu when it gets here.

TWD,

Do you have good luck with Tiger Direct?  I have ordered from them three times and every time they sent me the wrong item and I had to send it back and get them to re-send the item I orginally ordered.

I've generally had good luck with them.  Only once did they mess up an order, but it was because I canceled it, and they got their wires crossed, and shipped it anyway.  I ended up deciding to keep it.

I have a friend who is Mister Rebate.  He gives away stuff he gets free after rebate from Tiger; it's quite funny, really.  I'm sure he's their nightmare.

I am fixing to migrate from Kubuntu to plain debian.  I can't wait!  (link removed per forum rule 3.3)
