Help - lol
« on: Fri Jan 08, 2010 - 18:27:59 »
I can laugh now but a day or so ago, I was not laughing   ::destroyingcomputer::

My desktop crashed or something.  I managed to get my laptop up and running online but I cannot move around on some websites.  I get thrown off.  One is youtube.  Also, if I post a youtube video my laptop starts to die in the middle of the video.  The other site I am trying to access and move around on has alot of stuff on it.

Is my laptop not able to handle some websites that have alot on them?  If I remove some programs would that help?  The one site, I really want to get back onto, as I am a writer and putting together a book and I want to use some posts on there for my book - with their permission of course....

Anybody?  ::prayinghard::

I know nothing -but I'm learning as I get problems -my bet is that it has nothing to do with your computer itself --it's that darned server of yours.
But, they will blame it on you.

It might not have anything to do with your problems, but do you have some kind of antivirus software(Norton, Mcafee, AVG, etc.) on your computer and is it up to date? Also have you done a FULL scan lately?

Hi sweetie!  Sorry I haven't answered your PM yet.  But it is that site I cannot manuever around on.  I'm wanting to copy some stuff from there and purchase the book "Captivating" but I keep getting thrown off.  I could use some prayers for protection if you think of me because I think all of this is from the enemy and I almost lost alot of my writings  ::cryingtears::

Thank God, I had just backed up all my latest work.....I'll give you a free copy of the book if you promise to pray for me  rofl  That is, after it gets published  ::lookaround::

HI!

Do you ever frequent used bookstores or Goodwills?
Captivating is there alot. I've gotten 3 copies to give out - I remember when it was maybe $20, then $14.   Can't beat $2 at a Thrift store.
You've read Sacred Romance, right? The best - I've gotten 6 copies of that at least for $1 each.
Eeks, they will be sending this to book reviews soon.
Take care, sis.
XO Elaine

You've got to have an anti-virus program - AVG is free and updates alot --I know this bec someone told me after installing it on my laptop, bless his little heart. I makes me sound smart to say it.
PS I love saying I know John McAfee. Friends with his girlfriend, bla bla...

Oops! You probably have viruses, I am using Microsoft Essentials. It seems to be one of the best free antivirus programs that can be downloaded. It’s at  http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials

Another program that will clean a computer of spyware and trojans is Spybot Search and Destroy. Can be found at http://www.filehippo.com/

No.  I was kind-of afraid to because I have not been able to remove "Windows Security alerts".  I did try the other program you mentioned and the short scan was over 45minutes long and was not even half way done and then my computer switched off...It was obvious to me the computer was struggling...

OK, here is my suggestion, if you are willing to try it.

Download Spybot and install it, then restart your computer and go into “Safe Mode

I worked on two computers this weekend and they were both infected with Fraud.Sysguard.
Fraud.Sysguard is a fake security software that gets installed in the background by trojan horses like Virtumonde.
If that is what you have, Spybot will remove it and anything else that it finds.

I forgot, after installing Spybot, it needs to be updated. Run it and click on “Search for Updates

ConqueredbyLove,

If you are a writer, I recommend getting away from Windows and get an Apple. There are some great programs out there for writers like MacJournal, which has many features that other programs like Microsoft Word doesn't offer like an auto save feature for one. Plus Apples rarely crash and never get spyware, malware, viruses, or trojans. If you need a reliable computer, Macs is the only way to go.

Good luck.

I'm going to throw it out the window  ::destroyingcomputer::

Charles, thank you!  That Mac program looked great!  I am putting together two books and am close to submitting one manuscript for  possible publication.  This is sooo frustrating.  I know it is the enemy but when will this ever stop... ::frown::

Victor, I downloaded the newest program from that website, installed it and it scanned 34% of my files and then did the same thing as happened before...the computer nearly froze.  At that point it had found over 1700 illnesses...but I could not get past that point and have them removed because the computer stopped.  I give up for now...I have spent sooo much time on these two computers and nothing is resolved...I have an almost constant problem with computers as the enemy hates the work I do....grrrr.  No more lol...

If I get a Mac, do I have to learn a new operating system?

I was afraid of that. Sometimes running Spybot in Safe Mode can remove malware, but I usually have to boot to a stripped down version of XP called BartPe to clean out the infected computer.

Bartpe is a way to run a clean, minimal version of Windows XP on a PC.

This allows me to fix problems that would be next to impossible without it, such as removing virus and other malware, replacing corrupted files, fixing registry problems, etc.

I originally had it only only on a CD, but a netbook required a bootable Usb since it did not have a CD or DVD drive.
Now I can boot of the CD or the USB drive.

Sorry I didn’t explain it better.

Oh, no problem...I was just having fun with you... ::huggingyou::

One cannot get the free download you mentioned anymore...at least as far as I could see from the website.

What about if I try this?  Purchase the new 2010 virus remover that is on their website.  Then, scan part of my files...stop and have it remove those infections and then  at a later date scan the rest and at that time have it remove the rest?  That way, perhaps my computer would not get so bogged down?

I would not recommend purchasing anything, the free software is just as effective.

Did you download Spybot, run the update, and THEN reboot to safe mode to do a full scan.

Here is the link  http://www.filehippo.com/download_spybot_search_destroy/

Dear sister  ConqueredbyLove

a. first almost certainly nothing is lost from the desktop computer.
b. most probably, most files and the operating system are infected. No .txt or .doc files though.

my approach to this would be:

a. disconnect from Internet and the network (if any, ie WI-FI) and from the notebook.

b. get a a new, cheap  hard disk of equal or greater capacity of the one you have.
c. buy ESET NOD32 or SMART SECURITY (includes antivirus and firewall and its not heavy on resources).
d. install both on the new disk, which should be the PRIMARY BOOTABLE DISK.
(maybe you'll need some help there, but nearby computer expert can do it for a small price).
e. scan the old disk with ESET using normal settings.
f. after is finished you'll get a list of what is infected.
g. select  CLEAN or REPAIR first.
h. whatever the program is unable to clean, MUST BE DELETED. With this process most probably some critical
system files will be deleted, rendering the old system inop.
i.  now time to make a new folder on the new disk labeled "RESCUED"
j.  copy all documents, music, pictures or other importnt files like bookmarks etc to that folder.
k. FORMAT the OLD DISK and disconnect it, in case ... you need to repeat the process in future ! lol
by disconnecting I mean no cables attached to that disk AT ALL. It can stay safely inside the machine !
Or before you do that you may wish to re-install XP nd have it there dormant. If it was Vista, I stongly
   suggest upgrade to Win 7.

-MAC is the best solution for your work, but you might have some problems transfering files from the PC.

-Notebook cleaning is more involved and need like Victor08 suggests bootable special USB stick or CD/DVD.
better be left to an expert.

Hope above is helpfull. Dont despair and dont break or throw the machine in dissapointment. Nothing is lost !

In Jesus love

Vangelis

PS Sorry forgot to mention, you have to put aside 24 hours or more to comlete the task !!!   ::tippinghat::

Dear Vangelis,

Thank you, so much, for taking the time to answer in such a detailed response.  I think I will copy your answer and give it to a computer repair person as it sounds a bit complicated to me.

You and Victor a jewels to be willing to help me out!

You do have to learn a few new things, but its pretty much the same minus the headaches.
