Dear sister ConqueredbyLove
a. first almost certainly nothing is lost from the desktop computer.
b. most probably, most files and the operating system are infected. No .txt or .doc files though.
my approach to this would be:
a. disconnect from Internet and the network (if any, ie WI-FI) and from the notebook.
b. get a a new, cheap hard disk of equal or greater capacity of the one you have.
c. buy ESET NOD32 or SMART SECURITY (includes antivirus and firewall and its not heavy on resources).
d. install both on the new disk, which should be the PRIMARY BOOTABLE DISK.
(maybe you'll need some help there, but nearby computer expert can do it for a small price).
e. scan the old disk with ESET using normal settings.
f. after is finished you'll get a list of what is infected.
g. select CLEAN or REPAIR first.
h. whatever the program is unable to clean, MUST BE DELETED. With this process most probably some critical
system files will be deleted, rendering the old system inop.
i. now time to make a new folder on the new disk labeled "RESCUED"
j. copy all documents, music, pictures or other importnt files like bookmarks etc to that folder.
k. FORMAT the OLD DISK and disconnect it, in case ... you need to repeat the process in future ! lol
by disconnecting I mean no cables attached to that disk AT ALL. It can stay safely inside the machine !
Or before you do that you may wish to re-install XP nd have it there dormant. If it was Vista, I stongly
suggest upgrade to Win 7.
-MAC is the best solution for your work, but you might have some problems transfering files from the PC.
-Notebook cleaning is more involved and need like Victor08 suggests bootable special USB stick or CD/DVD.
better be left to an expert.
Hope above is helpfull. Dont despair and dont break or throw the machine in dissapointment. Nothing is lost !
In Jesus love
PS Sorry forgot to mention, you have to put aside 24 hours or more to comlete the task !!!
