I Can't block a Website
« on: Wed Jan 22, 2014 - 12:31:10 »
Hello I am new hear. For personal reasons, I need to block Youtube on all browsers. For some reason, my computer will not block this site(nor any other. I have a Toshiba Laptop with Windows. I have gone into my control panel, then Network and Internet, to Internet Options on the security tab, then finally I clicked on restricted sites. I typed in http://www.youtube.com then pressed enter. I closed everything and then attempted to visit the site. Still fully accessible despite it being on the restricted list.

I even did a malware cleanse to make sure nothings interfering with my controls. But no luck there. ::destroyingcomputer:: A couple of months ago I installed Webblocker 2.0 which worked perfectly until about a month ago. I just like to know why my computer suddenly quit doing it's job. ::frustrated::

Thanks in advance

R.J.

Go to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\
In this directory is a file called "hosts"
Open it with Notepad.

At the end of the file you should see something like: 127.0.0.1 localhost.
Below that line, add the following:

127.0.0.1 www.youtube.com

You can add other domain names the same way
127.0.0.1 another.domain.com

Save the file. Make sure you do not have any extensions such as "txt".
You need administrator rights to save files in this folder.

Alternatively, and should actually also be done for even better shielding, you should block www.youtube.com on your router.
Usually you can access your router by entering 192.168.1.1 in your web browser.
Key in the password and go to the section "firewall".
Modern routers will allow you to enter in a keyword (example "youtube"). All website addresses containing "youtube" will now be blocked.

Thank you AVZ for the tips. The first one didn't work. However, I've just installed K9 on my computer and it actually works! Youtube is now off limits! ::disco:: I thank God Almighty!!! I just couldn't bear the possibility of giving up the internet. Especially after being exposed to Al Maxey, Jay Guin, and Dr. John Mark Hicks to name a few.
