Title: Keyboard Shortcuts
Post by: admin on Thu Feb 22, 2007 - 11:33:21
Keyboard shortcuts for PC

Many people have been using their computer for years and don't know about these simple little tricks to save time.

For example, if you want to copy and paste something, it's actually quicker to highlight the text and then hold down the Ctrl key and push the letter "c". Then to paste it into a document, hold down Ctrl and push the letter "v".

Another is that if you want to open a new browser window, instead of going up to file and clicking "open new window." Just hold down Ctrl and push the letter "n".

Cool huh? Though it doesn't seem like much, you'll find it saves you time.

Please share other handy keyboard shortcuts that you know and specify if they are for a PC or Mac.

 ::typing::

PS -- If you find that the keyboard shortcuts don't work for you on your PC, try pushing your shift key 5 times in a row to turn it on (you may have accidentally turned it off at some point).

For PC:

Ctrl+Z undoes your last action
Ctrl+E will center text in Word
Ctrl+L will left-align text
Ctrl+R will right-align text
Ctrl+Y and F4 repeats the last action
Ctrl+X cuts text to be pasted elsewhere
F2 will allow you to edit directly in a cell (in Excel)
Ctrl+Shift+End will select all the data in an excel document
Ctrl+A will select all text in Word
Ctrl+B will make text bold
Ctrl+I will italicize text
Ctrl+U will underline text

I am the queen of shortcuts! LOL

 rofl

I wonder how many people will try this one.

And Mandalee mentioned the rest of the ones I know for PC.

Most of it is the same on a MAC

Command C Copy
Command X Cut
Command V Paste
Command D Show/Hide Dock
Command - Tab Switch application
Tab - Highlight next item
Option-Command - esc Force Quit
Control - Eject Restart, Sleep, Shutdown dialog box
Control-Command - Eject Quit all applications and restart
Option-Command - Eject or Option-Command-Power Sleep
Command - Cycle through windows in application or Finder (if more than one window is open)
Function-Delete (PowerBook, iBook only) - Forward Delete (delete the character to the right of your cursor)

If your keyboard has the windows key, there are a few more shortcuts.

For example, window key + E will open up my computer.  windows key + D (or M) will minimize all your windows and bring you to your desktop.  CTRL + windows key + M restores the minimized windows.  If you are on a work computer, windows key + L will lock it for you.

Also, in your browswer windown CTRL + R refreshes the page, ALT + Let arrow goes back one page, and ALT + right arrow goes forward one page.

Ctrl+T    opens a new tab for you on the internet. (not everyone has it. Just try it if you don't know what it is, you'll find out if you have it or not)

one of my faves is alt+tab, helps me cycle through all my open windows, especially helpful on xp when you open a dialog box (add new printer) it doesn't always show up on the taskbar at the bottom.  oh on vista windows+tab gives the nice 3d effect to switching through open windows.

When entering a new web address, just type in the text and hit

Ctrl+Enter to add www...com
Shift+Enter to add www...net
Ctrl+Shift+Enter to add www...org

It's one of my favorite shortcuts.

Alt + D takes you to the address bar in both IE and Firefox.
F5 refreshes a web page using the same.
Ctrl + End takes you to the bottom of a page that scrolls in most Windows apps.
Ctrl + Home takes you to the top.
Ctrl  + Right/Left Arrow takes you one word to the right or left in any Windows text editor.
Ctrl + F is Find in many Windows apps, including IE.

Are you sure? Someone told me you press Ctrl F-u.   Were they pulling my leg?

Isn't it easier to just use the caps lock key?

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but won't the SHIFT key do that by itself?   ::intherain::

just sayin ... a lot of these shortcuts will NOT work on a MAC, if anyone is wondering. Mac has a bunch of their own shortcuts. If there are any mac users out there.
