Just start a thread on viruses and see them all pop up with "I don't have that problem- I have a Mac"

If Macs were actually popular and had good market share, they would have more viruses.

Not getting viruses isn't the only good thing, not having my computer slow down or crash is nice too.

Not getting viruses, not slowing down or crashing, and not overspending would lead one towards Linux instead of a Mac.  Now that Mac uses Intel based hardware like everyone else, Mac is just basically an OS.

Macs don't cost more than a decent laptop. If you are comparing them to the econo-tops like the $400 dells and emachines that are running the absolute lowest end hardware that fail within a few years, then yes I can say they are higher priced. But compared to a mid range notebook macs are no higher than sony or toshibas really. This macbook pro is $1100, plus it was a up charge of $80 exchange at best buy for a windows laptop that failed within the warranty period and couldn't be repaired.

Not trying to sound condescending or elitist, but after going through 3 windows laptops I just wanted one to work for awhile.

Truthfully, I buy economy.  Haven't had a hardware failure yet.  Vista stinks to high heaven.  But then again, as I've said before, the hardware on a Mac is roughly equivalent to a mid-range Windows intel-based machine, as now Mac's are Intel based.

I've usually gone AMD because it is cheaper, and has a more efficient processor.

I have been planning to convert my old XP desktop to run MythBuntu, but haven't had the time.

I have been considering installing yellow dog or debian on this just to do it, but I would loose so much data it wouldn't be worth it. Although I installed Ubuntu on my second to last laptop before my oldest accidentally knocked it off the arm of the couch and broke the screen. I had installed Compwiz on there with some other oddites, and it ran fantastic. It just was very limited in what apps it could run.

For now I will stick with OSX since I'm already dealing with it. But next install I might just try yellow dog.

Mac's do not cost more than an equivalent performance PC.  The 299 Dell is not even close to the capabilities of the entry level 600 mac(mini).

Thank you!

Just because its intel based now doesn't mean its equal to a dell.

I have a Mac and have had them since the beginning. When Windows was MS Dos and Mac had their desktop. For what I use a computer for, I wouldn't buy anything else.

I've used a PC from  Dos/Windows 3 - Vista and a Mac from 9-10.   I know my PC experience way too well to choose PC over Mac (or to give that xBox line anything more than a "meh" followed by a ::whatever::).  ::smile::

I don't buy Dell's*  or equivalent performance PC's.  The cost is a lot cheaper for a mid-range PC than a Mac.

*Dell used to be higher than others because it had great technical support.  It doesn't have the support it once does, but still has high price for the hardware.

Apple at least still gives you what you expect for the money.  Fantastic operating system, great hardware, and a good customer support system (especially if there's an Apple Store in town, which there is for me).  And that's not a "used to" like with Dell (I used to be a Dell customer, too, before the slide).

Nope. When you compare machines that are similar in real world performance, a Mac and a PC are roughly the same cost.  The reason that the perception that Macs are more expensive persists is because of the bottom end $300 PC's that are usually one or two processor generations behind the times and which have anemic sized hard drives and if we're talking about a laptop a battery life of around 42 seconds.
