My desk top will not turn on
« on: Sat Nov 14, 2015 - 19:24:03 »
HELLLLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPP........

I have a desk top.

Dell Studio SLim 540S

Yesterday I went to turn it on and it would not turn on. I pushed the button and nothing.... I moved the plug and verified it was not that problem.

In addition there is a small green led light on the back of it, and this is on showing there is power.

I use that one... ( I am writing from a laptop)... for keeping special documents, work,  and mostly because it is the one tied into my printer.

No I never backed up anything on an external hard drive. ( I have no clue how to do that)

Anyway... as clueless as I am, and not wanting to spend a fortune to take it to a shop if
it is shot I decided to search online. It was bought in 2010.

I did find a couple of sites that have made some suggestions.....

I was told first to

"Replace the CMOS battery, especially if your computer is more than a few years old or has spent a lot of time turned off or with the main battery removed. Believe it or not, a bad CMOS battery is a relatively common cause of a computer that looks like its not receiving power."

So I did manage to get the cover off and locate it.....

But I have not done yet as I need to go buy one... I assume Radio Shack has these?

Anyway... if you have any advice for me or something else to try, I would appreciate it.

This is all Greek to me  ::destroyingcomputer::

Thanks

No, no beeping at all, and the fans are not working either.

Just the green led on the back.

Even with the light on, your power supply could be dead.  If it isn't converting the AC from your wall outlet to DC power for your motherboard, it wouldn't turn anything on.

With the case open, are there any LED's on the motherboard inside the case when you have it plugged in?

Later models of PC's work on low voltage and all power is controlled by the motherboard.
If there is a fault, and that can be with the processor, fans, memory banks, battery, graphics card, mother board itself or main power the PC will simply not start.
The green light you see on the back of your PC is likely the indicator of your network card which always has power since later models can be powered on and off through the network.

The most practical way to check which part of the PC is causing problems is to change them out one by one.
Try another power supply, another memory bank, another graphics card etc.
If you do not have the spare parts this is impossible to do.

Best thing you can do is bring your PC to a small computer repair shop. They should be able to get to the bottom of the problem pretty fast.
This does not have to be an expensive job. Changing the main power supply or a processor fan will cost a few dollars whilst changing your mother board can cost a few hundred.

Good luck.

OK, I change the battery and nothing....

I also tried a different power supply cord and nothing...

I do not know of a small repair shop, just the office depot types so guess I'll give that a whirl.

I just am too out of my element to go further myself.

Thanks

It may not be the cord, but the entire power supply.

Funny... Just recently my Windows Keyboard tablet won't turn on for some reason. It says it has power and is charged, but hold the button and nothing. Dude, do you have Windows on it? My tablet has W10.

Yes... windows....

Ironically I did not upgrade this desktop to 10... yet.

I did my laptop ( So far, no major issues and far better then 8.) but the desktop is still running Windows 7.

I actually Googled about my Tablet going black after I posted it, led me to a video. Long story short... I'm typing this using my Tablet. Tried Googling it? There's bound to be some answer.

Yes I did.... that is where I got the battery replacement idea and the power cord.... next steps are getting too complicated for me and if it is a motherboard or entire power thing then I would need a basic primer on that and
I am just not young enough to comprehend most of it... sigh

You can take out your hard drive and get a device like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-External-Lay-Flat-Docking-EC-DFLT/dp/B00LS5NFQ2/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1447637374&sr=8-3&keywords=usb+hard+drive+enclosure

It will make your hard drive of your current system like an external hard drive.

There has got to be some kind of kid at church that could help you without charging you an arm and leg.

OK, here is the update on what happened.

I took the computer to Office Depot because they said it was free to check it out and clean it.

The kid... cause that is what he is LOL... checked it by taking the cover off and then after
trying the on off button a few times declared that he could take it apart and check every wire looking for the problem, and that it would likely run around $300.00.

This is a 5 year old computer.

So I said no.

He then checked the harddrive on a laptop there and it was still ok, so he copied all the files from that to
a flash drive.....

So at least I have that, and the cost for all of what he did came to $65 ish.

I took the flash drive and my hard drive back home and left the computer with them to dispose of...
That was $5 of the $65.

Now... I do not know what I should do about replacing it.

Do I want another desk top OR do I want a laptop  and use a docking station so I can still use my
big monitor?

In addition... what brand do I want?

I do not need a lot of bells and whistles as I use my PCs for emails, forums like this, creating letters and documents... some picture storage.. so I likely only need a word product????????????

But it has to connect to my printer... ( An HP) and neither of my other two laptops would. And I had
a real professional try that one before I replaced my printer.

Any suggestions....?

In addition... since the thing will only last 4 to 6 years, do I even need a good one?  Maybe an el-cheepo
like Acer?

The thought of spending hundreds on something that wont last all the time really bothers me.
And yes, with the set up in the house I need the 3.

Since you already have all the peripherals for a desktop, I'd suggest getting another. You should be able to find something well under $300 and if you're willing to go with a refurbished or even a used one, possibly $100.

Another option for value purposes is going with Chrome OS rather than Windows, they're inherently much faster with less specs and much more secure but there is a bit of a learning curve involved since they're Linux based. I'm sure there is much help available via Google if you were to run into issues.

Chrome would be complicated for printing.

Should be drivers compiled into "/lib/modules/" usually the most common and basic drivers are available.

Would help to know the make/model of the printer to know if a nix version exists.

After turkey day and I have a moment...

UPDATE
First in response to Alans question...  Printer is an HP 4635 all in one.

I took some time over this past weekend to actually manage to get it installed on my two
laptops.

I did it.... surprise... because when I got my first laptop, my socalled "geek" could not get the Lexmark
printer to install even though I had a disc. But the HP was done all online.... ::tippinghat::

So....Now I am in posession of a brand new Dell Laptop.

Bought in semi-haste... not because I needed it now, but cause I want a computer close to the printer and
not rooms away.

Also... has easy pay so I did not need to fork it all out at once.... ::giggle::

BUT.... It has no word product on it.

I had the option of ordering that new Word bundled thing that will be charged every year for things
I will never use or nothing... so I went with nothing.....

Now I need to get a word processing program for it.

Question. I have a disk from word 2007 and was wondering if I can use that... or is that cheating the system?

I have read of free ones onlibe but do not know if they are any good.

I will need to do docs and letters and all on the new one so suggestions please.

I can order word 2016 for $150. but would like not to have to if I can avoid it.

Thanks
