Need Help
« on: Sat Dec 26, 2009 - 13:48:30 »
I'm soon going to buy my wife a PC to replace our 8 yr old Compaq Presario. I know, a real dinosaur. She wants a good computer to look at Facebook pictures and videos of our kids. What is the optimum specs for that sort of thing?

I don't want to buy a stealth fighter when a piper cub will do, but also I don't want to just get by until next week when the parameters change again.

If I was buying another computer, I would want a 64 Bit motherboard and a 64 bit OS, so I could put more than 4GB of ram in it.

For what you want to do, most laptops would be fine, although I think 2GB or ram is necessary nowadays.  Hard drive and processor aren't that big of a deal for just looking at facebook and limited videos.

Thanks Bo. I'll see if I can put on a full court razzle dazzle for the geek squad at Best Buy!

Well, you know I'm a Mac guy, but assuming you're wanting to stay PC, I'll second what Bocephus said.  I've got a PC, too, and it's a 64 bit laptop.  I wouldn't go less than that.  It shouldn't set you back too far.  I think my laptop was on sale for about $550 w/a 17" screen.  If it's going to replace the desktop, go for a large size screen.  When I got mine, going from 2-4 gig of ram, from 32-64 bit, and from 160-320 gig hd, and from 15"-17" for a whopping $150 difference.  That's what you call a bargain.

Ask how many memory slots does it have. Most cheaper mb’s only have 2 slots.
If possible try to get one with 4, you can add more memory in the future.
