OK.... It is coming close. Windows 10 "free"
« on: Tue Jul 14, 2015 - 08:21:45 »
Does anyone have any idea if one should or should not switch?

I am now getting to computer notifications and am in a quandry.

I am attracted because they say "FREE". But in research that may not always be the case.

I have a desk top with 7 on it, I have a laptop with 7 Pro on it, and a laptop with 8.1. I HATE WINDOWS 8.1.

I have no problem switching to 10 but do not want to have to pay for updates a couple of year down the road.

I have been told that no computer lasts... and that the expected age is 6 or 7 years. My desk top is at 6 years, and
one laptop is about 3.

Would I be better keeping what I have and then if I replace any get Windows 10 then?

If you buy a computer with Windows 10 already installed, then would you get the updates for free?

I HATE technology  ::destroyingcomputer::

Of course you should get it.
If you don't like it then you just install the original OS back.

Windows 10 is a free upgrade for windows 7 and windows 8 users, but only if you upgrade within a year of release.  I would upgrade the window 8 machine, but the windows 7 machine may be too old.

That being said...wait about 3-4 months before you upgrade...by then the initial release bugs should be worked out.

DW and I been getting these also.  We have 3 computers "eligible," my laptop which is about 7 or 8 years old (went thru a flood - takes a licking and keeps on ticking...) and my wife's laptop which is 2 years newer.  Both run Win 7 home premium.  My desktop (built so we would have something after the flood) is not quite 2 years old and is running Win 7 Pro 64 bit.  It has high end sound and video made for audio production.

We both need to find out if our programs (my audio, synth and DAW; her Electric Quilt) will work under Win 10.

I am hoping there is a download file so we can install at some future date. My son in law (married to youngest daughter) says to go for it (he has been running a beta version for several months) - but he was a big advocate of Win 8 as well and we all know how bad that one was.

Why didn't you just put this new question in the thread that you've already posted in here? Many of us I am sure look in the computer section for these topics.

My fault...I should have moved it to the appropriate forum when I responded.  Fixed now.

For the simple reason I could not find that.

I do not have the advantage a lot of other have in being able to readily find former threads unless I bookmark them or save them to favorites.  If they are not important at the time, I do not do that.

Sorry I got it wrong.... again.

You didn't do anything wrong.  The General Forum is a good spot when you are not sure where to put something.  It's up to us to move it later on if need be.

I read something yesterday about the product life cycle and impending support/charges, and it seemed from that article that it may be smarter to stick to Windows 7 for those machines that have it due to its long support life.

I think I've said this before but I'll post it here again. I used Win 10 for approx 3 months with very few issues which is rather good considering it started as a first edition developer's preview with subsequent updates. At the time W10 was released in the technical preview, or developers preview we had believed it to be simply the next OS in line from MS, but as time went on we began to see what MS is up to with W10, it will likely be the last OS that MS offers as an installation. IOW, all updates and changes to software and hardware will be provided via new versions of W10, such as W10.1, etc, etc. This will probably be the way we see OEM products using Windows in the years to come, not necessarily a bad thing but something to consider for future reference or before installing the W10 upgrade.

W10 will most certainly be an upgrade from W8.1, if only for the GUI, but for W7 users it may not offer anything that is of interest in the way of new features, and it likely won't perform any better.

http://www.techradar.com/us/news/software/operating-systems/10-great-new-features-in-windows-10-1267365

MS believes it can be a contender in the multi device platform world, hoping that sales of tablets and Windows phones increase but that may not be so far fetched as developers may just jump on the bandwagon if W10 OS takes off as MS hopes it will.

Was going to perform a clean install on my desktop but after realizing how much housecleaning I need to do here I opted for the "upgrade" using the Media Creation Tool via Microsoft.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install?ocid=ms_wol_win10

The tool allows you to either perform a straight forward upgrade or create an ISO for disc or USB installation.

So far the upgrade has been great, but the boot times are not even close to what I was experiencing using the Technical Preview. I suppose I should get another SSD, I believe Windows is optomized for solid state and Windows takes full advantage of it while starting. Other than a little slow booting, Windows 10 has been working awesome.

I have it, now. Much better than Windows 8 but... I'm not impressed. Gave it every chance and every benefit of the doubt, but PC is already a dying race... Think I'm just gonna stick with Android Tablets, now.

I wouldn't say dying race quite yet, MS still has over 90% of the market share in computers, tablets are just not adequate for everyday computing needs.

They're adequate enough. I'm actually typing here on a tablet itself. Social Media, entertainment, emails, most things the common man would use a computer for you can use a tablet or a phone for today. My mother is an executive at Pepsi, and she mostly just use her iPad for business. Even to this day, my phone can hook into a bluetooth printer, so PC isn't even needed for that anymore. Microsoft understood this, hence the implementation of Windows 8, a more tablet-style software, only that it failed in the eyes of many...

I upgraded my 8.1 laptop to W10.

For my basic purposes it is alright and is easier then W8.1.

My concern at the moment is what I have been reading about the privacy end of things and how we are supposedly being monitored ( spied on)  far beyond what we expect.

Does anyone know anything about that end of things?

I am wondering because there was an instance about  a week ago where my mom told me that she was wearing her Tommy Copper socks to see if she could reduce ankle swelling.

They were bought, but never worn much in 2013.

We were close to this laptop when the "discussion" was taking place and the vvery next day, in an email.... was an advertisement for Tommy copper.

Since I had not heard, mentioned, or looked that up and it has been nearly 2 years since she bought them I thought it quite ironic.

But then began to wonder if a mic on a laptop actually can spy on conversations?

if so.... would keeping the speaker muted work to keep things private or should I just make a habit of turning the laptop off more often?

Yes, the mic on your laptop can pick up sound.  Not only that, but your webcam can also record and transmit information.

For those two reasons, I have not upgraded to Win 10.  I am waiting until the privacy issues are addressed first.

A little bit of electrical tape can take care of both of those issues.   ;-)

What concerns me is the data storage or should I say mining. I have read that it includes password/user name combinations, banking and credit card information, among other things.

If you are looking for something that doesn't spy on everything you do, try Linux Mint 17.2.  Easy install.  Chrome Browser.  Libre Office is decent.

Isn't Linux the basis for the Android OS?

I believe the Linux kernel is the basis.  And the original BSD, based on Unix is the foundation of Mac's OS X.

Apparently Window 10 actively scans your hard drive for "counterfeit" games (ie, pirated) games and software, and then disables it.

I have a few hardcore PC gaming friends that have been putting these allegations to the test and so far nothing they have done can prompt Windows to disable anything on their computers, nor have mics or cams been remotely activated by any Windows services.

The original service agreement seems to point to Microsoft games and hardware (XBox) that may have been illegally obtained or in the case of hardware, hacked to circumvent registration with MS. I can't find fault with MS for this at all, but so far it appears that the panic attacks surrounding MS spying on users is purely fabricated.

I keep my mic on mute so I dont have sound but I guess they could still hear.....

As to the webcam I put a piece of tape over as I do not use.

But I have had one issue two nights ago which made me decide to switch back to 8.1 within
the 30 days allowed to do such...

Had the thing on and let it sit for a while not using and the screen went ark after a while.... as I expect.... but when I went to put back on there was no internet connection.... So I tried the normal fix
and it did not work and had to restart.

A while later I left it just sitting on while doing some things and the very same thing when I tried to get it back..... a notice no internet connection...( but did have it on the other laptop with Win 7) SOOOOOOOOO.... after a bit I got a window that asked me if I wanted to try a complicated ( my words) fix or IF I WANTED TO SWITCH BACK TO 8.1.

I was on my way to bed and decided to tackle that yesterday morning.  Yesterday it worked fine.

But I am going to go back.... I am a very open person but really do not like the idea of being monitored.

Personal privacy is a serious concern for anyone who surfs, shops or banks online. Google, Facebook, advertisers, hackers and others are constantly trying to get your information so they can make money for themselves. We also don't want to leave Microsoft off that list. With every version of the Windows operating system, it's digging further and further into your personal life, and the new Windows 10 is no exception...

I'm sure they do dirty with it as well but...

Well here's the thing. When many people use Google, they prefer to have results that's local or more akin to them. That requires the Google Algorithm to learn about them. Especially if you're on an Android phone, it uses your location to learn where you go, remember what you search, even use the mic to discreetly hear what you say to know what advertisement to give you. A lot don't like that and I don't as well (only because people generally cannot be trusted), but the concept behind it requires such. In order to get more personal results, you need Google to learn about you more personally.

Windows 10 has carried over Cortana from the phone OS, Cortana being based off the famous game series Halo, and is the equivalent to Siri and Google for Microsoft. It'll remember where you go and what you research, even use the mic to listen in so it can personify the searches more to you. I'm sure Microsoft would find a way to allow the Government to take a peak when they deem so dang necessary, but for the average user, that's the purpose of it, at least one of them.

It's the compromise. We live in a connected world, a digital world full of endless potential. But the more access we want to that potential, the more we'll have to upload ourselves into the digital world.

Have you ever tried using a modern device with all of the potential-spying options turned off? It ain't quick, nor is it convenient.

You can use a modern device such as a desktop with Linux and it is even faster.

What kind of serious multi track audio or video editing can you do on a tablet? What kind of 3d rendering and cad work?

A heads up, saw this on Yahoo. The tracking software in Windows 10, Microsoft is officially updating Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 with the same software. So if you have a Windows device and use it, no matter what you're getting tracked.

I'd need to see a more credible source to believe that Lex. I can believe that it may be bundled into newer retail purchases, but for someone like myself that only ever installed Win 7 from an ISO on multiple machines I don't believe it will be forced through automatic updates.

Still my circle of friends, some harcore gamers, others that are photo and video editors, and others that are just plain over paranoid have had no substantiated issues as of yet. Most of the reported issues have been met head on with reports of false claims on these issues.

Still wise to keep our eyes open though regardless of how good or bad we find this OS (or any other) to be.
