PC "cannot find server" Ugghhh
« on: Fri Mar 25, 2011 - 10:59:03 »
Hello,

Got a computer question in case anyone out there might know what I need.

Our home PC (the one the kids use for homework...) will not connect to the internet.  We have cable internet and it connects directly to the PC via an ethernet cable.  I tried switching to a different ethernet cable, thinking maybe it died...but that didn't help.

My laptop, that works via a router on the same network, is fine.  So it isn't the "internet service" that is the issue.

I'm thinking maybe something inside the PC died...a piece of hardware that controls the online stuff.

Any thoughts?  If it is a piece of hardware...any thoughts on what it would be?

It is a rather old PC, running Windows XP currently.

Thanks!!
Jason

It could be your Ethernet controller that went bad or could be a software problem.

If you go to control panel and then network connections you should see if the local area connection says it is connected.

If it checks out OK then maybe you need to check the Lan settings in Internet Explorer if that is the browser you use.

THANKS so much for your advice!  I'll check it out!
