Satellite Internet
« on: Wed May 09, 2007 - 16:59:55 »
Does anyone here have experience with a satellite internet connection?  Would you recommend one or not?

I am rural, so cable is out.  I am even too far from a switching station for DSL.  There is one dial-up isp with a number that is local for me, so I can't just switch to another dial-up.  My service is so poor! I cannot listen to music or watch videos online at all, and sometimes pictures cause a page to time out.  It seems that satellite is my only other option.

Any comments?

Never,

We looked long and hard into it, but the cost was prohibitive ($65.00 a month here).  MY wife also didn't want another satellite on the house.

We have friends who have it and if installed properly they only have brief interruptions in their service during bad weather. They are getting 3 meg of download speed, which coming from dial-up to 3 megs of download speed would be like stepping off of a tricycle and getting in a Panoz Formula One Car.  ::driving::

Yeah, the cost is high - $50/month - but I'm paying $20/month for lousy dial-up.  I'm currently connected at 21.6 Kbps, which is about the usual.  I'd really like to get off this tricycle!

The company my wife works for had satellite internet for a while.  It beats dial-up, but isn't as good as either cable or DSL if you can get them.  It still used dial-up for the outbound side, though I understand some versions now use satellite both ways.

Satellite is plenty fast, but has a lot of latency, because the signal has to travel out to space and back.  What this means is, you click your button, and there is a pause, and then suddently everything arrives.  It takes some getting used to.

It will be better than click the button, pause, then wait 30 to 90 seconds while the page slowly loads.  If I could get DSL I would, but I can't, so I won't.  ::shrug::

I believe the cost of the equipment is about $600.
