Sound Card

Hello Everyone,

I was hoping that someone could help me figure out if I have a sound card or not. I just recently found out about sound cards but I don't quite know how to figure out if I have one or not. I have had this computer for a while but not having any sound wasn't an issue for me until recently. I bought some speakers for the computer hoping that it would work but it didn't.
 ::help::Please help me.

If you open up your control panel, double click on the "Sounds and Audio Devices" and select the "Audio" tab, that should tell you what, if any, sound card is installed.

Under Audio the part that says Sound Playback says that it is under Crystal WDM Audio for Sound Recording-the same and for MIDI Music Playback-MS GS Wavetable SW Synth. But still no sounds.

Please forgive me if this seems overly simple, but now that we know you do have a sound card, this is the first thing I would check.  In the "Volume" tab, there should be a check box next to the word "mute."  Is that box checked our unchecked?

PS.  I confess I spent hours trying to figure out why I had no sound only to find this was why...doh!

There is nothing to excuse or forgive you for. You're just being thorough and I appreciate it. I have checked the volume several times before you even asked me about it and the mute indicator is not checked off. This is why I don't know what the problem really is.

Would you permit another simple check?  Again, I only ask because I have done this myself.  Have you checked to make sure the speaker is plugged in to the correct hole in the back?  Typically there is a "mic" "line in" and "speaker" hole. 

If it is in the right hole, try going to the site below and downloading the driver for your sound card:

Or perhaps....

If you have external speakers, are they turned on? Is the power supply for the speakers plugged in?

One more test:  Do you have beans in your ears?


(btw, I'm having major sound difficulties myself. I know what to do to fix them, but don't know when I'll have the patience to do it.)

Okay.  My sound problem is fixed.  I went to my device list, found the one with a check mark indicating it wasn't working (crystal wdm audio codec), uninstalled it, then used the search for new hardware function to automatically reinstall it. 

I can hear clearly, now.
