The cord that does not fit

Recently my fiancée ordered a keyboard from the Dell Company from e bay. She got this for me for a surprise as old keyboard letters is wearing down. . She plugged in the keyboard and nothing happened. She tried it on the other computer and the same thing. .. ::destroyingcomputer::
 
Because of some lost receipt it can not be returned for a refund. . The keyboard has at the end a purple cord to plug back in the tower. It goes all the way in but only part of it connects. She said let’s just throw it away I guess. Well I told her some people know about electronics. Maybe someone can fix this problem.
 
So this purple cord thing at the end of the keyboard won’t fully connect into the tower as it seems the size of the cord may be a bit smaller than the tower was made. .  ::frustrated::This is made by Dell and we have a Compaq but Compaq is also Hewlett Packard owned. Should Dell keyboard have any problem with Hewlett Packard tower to connect properly? If the size does not fit is there a solution to get the right purple end to fit with the back of the tower? If that were possible where do we go and would that cost a lot of money to do this?. Thanks to anyone who is able to give any helpful suggestions.  ::help:: your friend quest

The round purple end is a PS-2 plug.  The matching one for the mouse has a green end.

Most systems made in the last 10 years use mice and keyboards that connect via a USB port which is rectangular. So I am not surprised that you cannot make it work.  You can get a PS-2 to USB adapter but they are a bit hard to come by.

Does your Compaq tower have ONLY the round PS-2 ports?  Or does it also have USB ports?  If the latter, lose the ps 2 keyboard and get a USB one.

Does your computer have USB ports?   If so I would go "cordless" which really means wireless.   Logitech have some nice packages with a keyboard and mouse that can work off the same USB transceiver so you only take up one USB port for two devices.  But, read on.

A Compaq is a pretty old computer and no offense, unless it has been upgraded it is far out of date.   H-P sell only under the H-P brand these days.   The Compaq may require the old PS-2 style connector and may not have any USB ports, or if it does they are the older USB 1.1 and the computer does not have drivers for 2.0.   We are up to USB 3.0 these days but 3.0 is backwards compatible with 2.0.

I thank you both first of all for your help which believe me is help.
But I wanted to say that because I have a very hard time typing on a flat keyboard
I need to have the staircase kind of keyboard to type with.

The only thing that was wrong really was the plug itself on the keyboard I bought.
The purple part just does not keep the contact all the way in.

So could either of you or anyone here tell me that if I brought the keyboard somewhere
is there a way that someone can replace just the purple part of the plug?
What kind of place do I need to bring it to? Someplace like Best Buy? Radio Shack? Comp Usa?

Also if I need to scrap this does anyone know if they make modern keyboards with staircase to it?

I doubt that BB or RS will do that.  (Is Comp USA even in business any more?)

I would try to find a dedicated electronics repair shop. They could probably soldier on a new end.

I am unaware of what you are calling a "staircase" keyboard.  Can you give a link?

Sounds like you have a PS2 keyboard.  You can find an adapter online.  Here is one at Amazon:
