To pay or not to pay for Anti Virus????
« on: Thu Mar 23, 2017 - 07:23:14 »
That is my question.

I have Avast on my computers.

I had always run the free Avast ( or any other that I had used)

Last year.. around August.. Avast had a terrific special which gave me the top tier of their for a bargain.

I tried it. And I had thought it was for a year...

Long story short I got notice they were going to auto deduct this month and the amount of money was ridiculous because I am not sure the added bells and whistles are necessary... Such as an added Firewall that you do not get if you do not pay. (Over ad above Windows firewall)

I stopped the auto pay but now am getting noticed that I have only 4 more days of paid service.

They have supposedly offered a discount...

But d0 I really need it?????????

Which OS Rella, it does make a difference.

I only use free AVs, but I also use Malware scanners from time to time as well, the freeware versions of MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpyware do an awesome job combined with the bundled AV of my OS. Almost 25 years of building, repairing, and maintaining PCs on a small scale business level, I've yet to pay for an AV for myself or my customers.

Windows 10 on all three.

Yeah, I use the included Windows Defender with Win 10 computers, it seems to do the trick for me and others, it's unobtrusive, uses little system resources, and it's FREE!

I only use free stuff.  And honestly, I have some misgivings about using any at all, based on articles like this and this.

Aside from downloading files, AdBlock Plus and NoScript extensions for FireFox or Chrome would probably do the trick, but Windows Defender seems to work well as a low resource AV.

A lot of virus's have a social element.  You open a Word document from your email that seems legit that has an embedded script, you respond to a notice you have a virus by clicking on the link presented, etc.

Not being gullible and knowing the pitfalls of the internet is a large chunk of the battle.

Exactly, good browsing habits are the best preventative measure.

Opening files? If at all possible open them in the browser, Office Online or even Google Docs are helpful apps, combined with NoScript that would ensure a fair bit of security but if we absolutely must D/L files I suppose right clicking and asking the AV suite to scan the file can be helpful if the AV doesn't already pick up the rogue file.

I'm giving Chrome OS a whirl on the 2nd partition of my laptop, it's Linux based but I haven't had enough time to say whether I like it or not.

By far I like Firefox, but it got so strange no one straightened it out for me.... so i a using Chrome.

It seems OK... but I miss my multirow toolbar.

Update... since I let the paid Avast lapse to the free end.... weird things seem to be happening... at least to the main laptop.

Might need to switch to another AV

I like and would recommend the "Full" (paid) version of Malwarebytes, it's a much better detector than most of the AV suites.

I recommend people not open email attachments.  Then not really necessary to pay for antivirus.

Then again, I have Linux Mint on old hardware at home.

True, but at the same time malware can get in from places such as Google images, or web sites that have aggressive advertising bots.
