Can't get rid of a program PROTECTPC which I downloaded by mistake. It has attached to another program.

Try this site  http://housecall.trendmicro.com/  It will scan you PC online.
I don't see this PROTECTPC coming up as a virus anywhere on the current lists. maybe you can post a jpg of your running processes and I'll take a look. PM me if you don't know how to do this.

I think PROTECTPC is one of a new class of malware called “fake alert”, it is not really a virus, so antivirus software won’t recognize it as such.

If it is, you should be able to go to add/remove programs in control panel and uninstall it.

I would suggest downloading superantispyware free edition http://www.superantispyware.com/
and running it to clean your computer.
