Isn't that speshul!

Having a built in hardware firewall in the wireless router helps.

Oh, and on the XP I've got Norton, Zonelabs firewall, and a router firewall.

McAfee. Since I contribute at Fsecure, I should really use theirs. McAfee's horrible.

Hi there! You have a virus? Would you like to simply continue what youre doing, or check to see if its really there? Idiots.

Well I'm a SysAdmin, our network has Symantec Corporate Edition, a Sonicwall Pro 2040 Firewall, Postini for SPAM blocking and I use Group Policy to lock down computers so we don't have much trouble with Spyware.

At home I don't even have Antivirus software go figure... if I ever take the time to put some on it'll be AVG

Norton.  It's always worked well for me but seems to be a resource hog.

I use AVG and for spyware blocking, Webroot's Spy Sweeper. So far so good, I suppose.   ::shrug::

Norton Internet Security 2006.  I have also played around with the new MS anti virus/spyware.  I like it but it doesn't give near as much info and customization options as the Norton.  I have also used PC-cillin.  However, I am going to continue to use the Norton IS 2006.  With all the rebates I got with it from Fry's, it is free.

How do you get AVG?

Do a search for AVG free on google and download the free software.

I downloaded AVG last night.  I was interested to see if it slowed my older system down as much as Norton.  It doesn't, and email is coming in at least twice as fast.  To Norton's credit, though, I've not had a virus of any kind several years, and AVG found my system to be clean already.

AVG has one gigantic advantage over Norton, and that is, it is F-R-E-E.

I use Bsafe online Internet Filters. It was recommended by Dave Ramsey, and works wonderfully. The one time that I had to call customer service. I actually talked to an American.......I have a hard enough time understanding computer lingo, much less with a heavy foreign accent.

I don't mind the accent of the person who takes my customer service call -- I have a good ear for accents.  What I hate is when THEY can't understane ME.

As for anti-vius programs, I don't need one.

For my home computer, I originally installed Symantec Corporate Edition, which DoD can supply free to employees, even to include the subscription.  (Thanks, taxpayers! ::tippinghat::)

The problem was getting NAV 2005 that was provided with my computer, uninstalled.  (No, it ain't as easy as you would think... ::frown::)

Then I decided that I would like to have parental control over what my 12-year old accessed, and the Cox Security Suite seemed the logical choice.  However, to install it, I had to uninstall the Symantec stuff (which, fortunately, was as easy as you would think) so now I am relying on Cox software for parental control, virus control, and some aspects of spyware and firewall protection.

BTW, for those who may use the Cox Security Suite at home, but are used to similar software which downloads and activates automatically: CSS does neither.

And while it reminds you when its files needs to be updated, it does not remind you to actually run the programs. ::doh::

Just be sure to remind yourself to periodically scan the drives with the software. ::nodding::

at home i use symantec corporate edition (joys of working for a large university with a lovely academic licsense package) and i love it except it does hog resources on my wifes old desktop.  I've dabbled with clamwin(me likey and its free). I'm thinking of giving Avast a try (free for home use). I haven't used AVG in a while 'cause i didn't like it when i tried it out about 4 years ago.
all of this shouldn't matter too much by the end of the year as i am going to switch my wife's desktop to a Mac and my laptop to Linux(Ubuntu to be precise).

Yep.  I run Gentoo Linux on this ThinkPad laptop, and on two servers at work, and now have a work server running Ubuntu.  Viruses are essentially nonexistent.  Worms and trojans do exist, but are rare, and tend to do much less damage.

Run this first.....http://www.myantispyware.com/2007/10/08/combofix-another-free-anti-spyware-tool/

That should take care of most of the issues, you can try AVG Anti-Spyware also.  Both programs are free and pretty straight forward.

I use Kaspersky. It's cheap off e-bay (at least in UK) and it has a high rating from PC Pro magazine (possibly a UK only magazine).

I have also used a free 3 month trial of Avira which was highly rated. That seems very good but renewal is expensive so I went back to Kaspersky.

The Internet Security version comes with some various extras over and above pure anti-virus.

Two of the best free ones in my opinion are: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm (when it's done with the scan, select "no I do not wish to be protected with Windows Live OneCare now" and it will fix your computer anyway without you having to buy the software that monitors your computer 24/7.

The other is http://www.malwarebytes.org. Both are excellent.

And yes, Charles my friend, Macs have fewer viruses usually (though I have a friend with a Mac who has all kinds of problems and my PC has been much stronger). But the reason Macs have fewer viruses is because they don't even own 10 percent of the market share. PC/Windows has 90% + of market share so obviously more hackers are going after their Windows software. PCs have to deal with far more attacking viruses than Macs. Macs can get viruses, it's just that the vast, vast majority of viruses are not programmed to Macs.
