SAN FRANCISCO (CNNMoney)

Windows 8 is going to start behaving a little more like Windows 7, but that doesn't mean Microsoft is giving up on the idea of a tablet-friendly operating system.

At its Build developers conference in San Francisco on Wednesday, Microsoft announced a trio of new features for Windows 8.1 that had a decidedly "old-school" feel: First, Windows will get a bunch of tweaks that make it easier to use with a keyboard and mouse. Second, Microsoft announced that Windows 8-style "Modern" apps will run in a window in the traditional desktop interface. Third, the Start menu -- the ultimate signifier of "old" Windows -- is eventually coming back.

"if anything, Microsoft's decision to cater to these unconvinced users isn't a step backwards -- it's a ploy to reel them in...It's a more gentle way of nudging the entrenched Windows 7, Vista and XP users towards change."

Pretty arrogant to think that they can change the mindset of millions of PC users.  I think the disaster that is Windows 8 shows the exact opposite.

There are third-party programs which enable that now.   Microsoft is not looking too good in the eyes of consumers.

I've only used Windows 8 for a very short period of time, but I think the app page is odd. Definitely tablet-like. Though I think you can easily bypass it, so if I had to get Windows 8, I wouldn't worry about it. Good for fast access, odd for things other than that.

No idea what Microsoft were trying to do. They got beaten in the tablet market, but still retained the laptop market, but yet they make a tablet based operating system for their small share of tablet users. They should just keep windows 8 as a tablet platform and concentrate on windows 7 until they make a windows 9 for laptop/desktop users, hopefully with improvements to their file management system, which is a pain in windows 7 with all these folders all over the place.

IMO they could take a page from <gasp> the Linux playbook and have a single OS under the hood with a couple of different desktop environments for laptops, desktops, tablets, phones, etc.

Not unlike having Ubuntu with Unity or Gnome or KDE or Xfce or Cinnamon.

Heck, maybe they could just write the underlying OS and use those desktops ......
