Rumors are circulating that Microsoft is going to issue a new operating system called Windows 9 to get users of XP, 2000, and Windows 7 off those operating systems and on a new OS. It is supposed to be a free upgrade. I don't trust Microsoft. What if Windows 9 is free but all of your other Microsoft programs are suddenly obsolete if used with Windows 9? Also, what about non-Microsoft programs, which Microsoft does not care about? I'm tired of their planned obsolescence and force feeding us with new programs must of us really don't want or need.
It's coming, there is supposed to be a preview release in about 5 weeks, we'll see.
Several issues here, suppose I had a company that sold Microsoft compatible software. I have to make sure that my product works with XP, Vista, W7, W8.x and now Windows 9?
Vendors don't like that and it's expensive for Microsoft to just keep reviewing updates and security updates for older versions people are no longer buying except for some corporate customers. If they try to charge the small number of users who want to keep the old versions enough they won't pay. If they don't charge them enough it doesn't scale.
And without updates we don't get new features. Most of what we see we take for granted, the OS is a lot more complicated.
The problem with Windows 8 was they wanted to have the same version for both tablets and desktops and favored the tablet model.
There was a reason for that. The reason is the new trend to have "apps" instead of going to a website and having the website do all the work or installing traditional programs.
I have an iPad4 I bought mostly for e-book reading but knew I'd have the apps and could use the web browser while sitting in the living room without going to the computer. Now I have an Apple account and every now and then I'll say "Only 3 bucks? I'll buy the app" and I do that when it provides me a value. Other apps are free but have mechanisms to provide ad revenue.
The App driven market is large, very large, imagine tens of millions of customers doing what I do and most of them probably spend a lot more. Microsoft wanted in on the app business and that is all there was to it.
If it's "free" it will probably be a free update for W8.x users and others may have to pay to upgrade from Vista and W7. This is how the 8.1 upgrade worked.
Microsoft got a bad name with Windows 8.x, they probably want to move on and have everybody feel about W9 the way most folks felt about W7 [but not about Vista].
