My favorite way to have cornbread. 90 percent crust.

Perfect for cornbread crumbled into a glass of milk. My granny called that cornbread and sweetmilk. I suppose they had it occasionally with buttermilk. They were tougher than me then.

Really though, try the cornbread in a waffle iron, you will never go back!

My mom used to eat "milk toast"... just toast in milk with sugar...

I never asked why and I never asked to try it.  LOL.

Sounds too soggy for me. Cornbread crust is better, WITHOUT sugar.

I knew people of my grandparents' generation that ate this in all three ways, in milk, in buttermilk, or in milk w/sugar.  The latter, I was told, was a Depression Era dessert.

Well, I know that since I was a kid, my toast when eating oatmeal goes in it.  I always, always put it in my bowl let it absorb the milk, butter, sugar, cinnamon and nice thick oats...

I'll eat oats without toast, but I'd much rather have it to dunk.

That's exactly the way my dad taught me to eat oatmeal. I still do.  Smile

I think I am going to try this the next time I make a pot of beans.  Place the waffle on the plate, ladle some beans on,(salt, pepper, some chopped onion on top) with some fried potatoes on the side...  That's eatin!

I like "Lima Beans and Rice" too... something else I learned from living in the south.  We ate that with fried chicken, and greens on the side more often than "mashed taters".

Kensington, once you've had waffle iron cornbread, you will never go back.

90 percent crust.

That would ruin it for me. I like the middle piece best. No hard crunchies.

So, Jaime - I tried the cornbread waffle thing. It was okay, but until I can get a decent waffle iron, I think I'll just stick with muffins.

Manda, it is great if you like cornbread crust crumbled in red beans or in milk, or stew or soup.
