It's very important that you pronounce it properly. It is puh con' not pee' can (as in a receptacle to urinate in) and absolutely not pee' cun (rhymes with beacon).

There are many many southerners that mistakenly pronounce it pee can. Though they are non-Texans! (yankees by definition)

I agree. Only a Yankee would put cream cheese in a pecan pie.  eek!

Jaime's right, kensington.  Pee-can is a portable urinal for camping--usually an old Folger's can.  You don't make pie from that--Southern or not.

And he's from Texas, where the pecan tree is the state tree, so he oughta know.

Agreed.  That's disgusting.  It reminds me of an old hillbilly folk song line..."She blew her nose in cornbread, and called it pumpkin pie!"

Texas is Texas... I've lived there.  My mother died there.  But the SOUTH is North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, ...

I don't even think they make pecan pie in Texas... but I know they make it in South Carolina where my Daddy and my family learned to make it.

So...  someone posts a recipe, trying to participate, and it's open fodder to mock them and their efforts to post here?  Nice.

No wonder so few have actually made an effort for this new forum.  No one cares, and if you do post a recipe... you will be mocked.  So... who cares?  Don't waste your time trying to fellowship.

Also, I think that if this is the case with this forum... it should be make clear that your recipe has to be approved before posting.  That would be nice for the rest of us.  I hope Admin will consider that option. It will keep us from clogging up the board with too many unnecessary recipes.

Maybe you missed it, but the pecan is the state tree of Texas.  They know quite well the art of making a pecan pie.  But we do agree on one thing, Texas is not "The South."  Smile

It's not mocking, and no one is being personal, except you in this post.  Taste, like beauty, is in the [mouth] of the beholder.  To each his/her own.  When okra comes up, Nick and I are always sure voice our love of it.  Nevertheless voices her disgust.  Not only does it not mean we're mocking each other, but it's a part of our friendly fellowship.  You can do that when you're not always on edge.

Thank you for all the corrections, notations about southern living, remarks about yanks and the note regarding displeasure at the idea of cream cheese mixed with pecan.  I even found the tutorial on urinals interesting, in some weird sort of way.

Pecan may certainly be pronounced 'puh con' but most literate folks recognize it's SPELLED pecan - even those whose manners would certainly wither the most staunch southerner around.

Thanks for the feedback.  Ummm, it's been a real eyeopener.

Loa... my mil and sil would love that recipe.  I think I saw it once in a magazine for in an ad for "Philly" Cream cheese.

Or maybe that one was for "Pumpkin" pie made in layers?

I don't think the recipe is disgusting, I think we are dealing with "meat and potatoes" type men.   Rolling on floor laughing

jmg... About that "Pecan"  pie in Texas thing...  "THAT" is a matter of personal opinion.   Rolling on floor laughing

Well, you pegged it - the recipe did come from a label or cream cheese box, although I don't recall which.

My reply to the posters here was probably much too harsh - I don't really know the 'rules' for posting, but I can say
I no longer think anyone was trying to be rude or condescending, etc.

My apologies for jumping on everyone about it.

I'm not really much of a cook - if it's not out of a book or off a label and I try to cook it?  The odds are no one will be wanting to eat it.   I came over here and posted some recipes because you invited me when I introduced myself a couple of weeks ago and I thought that was a nice way to start out posting here and try to meet some people.

Ultimately, recipes are just that - recipes.    Sometimes people like them, sometimes they don't.  And there is always a new day and a new recipe to try. :)

Be well and all good things to you and yours.
