Isaiah 9:6, “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given”
Matthew 1:21, “You shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins”
__________

Many years before the Savior was born, the Lord spoke through the prophet Isaiah, saying, “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). So, did God keep His word? Indeed He did! Galatians 4:4 states it this way, “When the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son.” There were no earthly plans for celebrating Jesus’ birth over two thousand years ago. Quietly and unannounced, Joseph and Mary, entered Bethlehem searching for a place to spend the night. It was a busy time in the Judean village, but the excitement and busyness had nothing to do with the upcoming birth of Christ. The crowds had gathered to take part in a census. They didn’t even know that Mary was about to deliver the Savior of the world.

Go back with me in time to Christmas Eve 1932. Robert McGimsey attended a midnight church service in New York City and after the service he headed back to his one-room apartment. As he walked those final blocks, he passed the open doors of private clubs where people were shouting, swearing, singing and while so many others were so drunk they had passed out in the clubs and on the sidewalk. McGimsey thought, what a very strange way to celebrate the birth of the most perfect Person who ever lived on this earth. We seem to have missed the whole significance of His life. It was that very night McGimsey wrote his thoughts down on the back of an envelope. These words, which were written like the spirituals he had loved growing up in the southern United States, flowed out of his heart:

Sweet little Jesus Boy,
They made You be born in a manager.
Sweet little Holy Child, didn’t know who You was.
Didn’t know You’d come to save us, Lord,
To take our sins away.
Our eyes was blind, we couldn’t see,
We didn’t know who You was.
__________

Further reflection:

My beloved, that song offers up an apology to the Christ-child for not recognizing Him when He came to this earth. However, every Christmas year gives us another opportunity with eyes wide open to respond to God with love and commitment for the gift of His precious Son, who died so we could have eternal life. Focus your thoughts, actions and motivation toward honoring the Baby who grew up and died for all our sins. So, as we celebrate the birth of Christ, let’s thank God that He meant what He said. He not only promised a Savior, but He also gave what He had promised, His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” (2 Corinthians 9:15).

As you move into this coming holiday season, in all of your good times with family and friends, make sure you don’t leave out the Lord Jesus. Please give Him the honor He deserves. Christ the Savior is born! Oh, how we need to recapture some of the wonder of that infant child coming into the world! He came into this war-torn world for one purpose – to die as a sacrifice for our sins. The forgiveness that He offers will satisfy the deepest need or our hearts. Truly, Jesus is a gift for all ages. The question would be:

(1) Have you by faith received that precious and indescribable gift?
__________

There is always the danger of keeping Christmas and losing Christ. And no gift is more needed by a dying world than the life giving Savior.
