Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:31-32. The key words in this particular passage are “If you continue”. It is important to continue in the word, many have started but Jesus brings to us a condition, we must continue in the discipline of the word in soul, mind and body, in the application of the word of God. The believer is to abide in Christ and through abiding in Christ we find freedom from sin.
Freedom from the power and dominion of sin is the work of the Spirit of Truth. The truth is a revelation of Jesus that the believer lives in. This truth lives in the heart and it is freedom from sin. “It is the Spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are Spirit, and they are life.” John 6:63. As we submit to the rule of Christ by obeying his word there is power to overcome sin. Abiding in the truth is a continuous process daily in the scriptures, in prayer and worship. If we are going to be free from sin we must abide in the truth. The truth must become a dwelling place.
The word of God is truth that lives on the inside. As we live by the word the work of the Holy Spirit empowers with grace to perform the will of God. “For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of truth of the gospel; which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of God in truth:” Colossian 1:5-6. The truth is the building block of faith and love. We must continue in faith that works by love. God has called us to be an expression of his love in this present world. The hearing of the word of God will cause one to bear fruit, Colossians 1:5-6. Truth is the door of revelation into the grace of God. The word of God is wisdom and knowledge for knowing and performing the will of God. This is the reason why we must continue to abide in the truth.
Maturity comes as a result of abiding in the truth, Ephesians 4:15. As we grow in the truth we grow up in love. Many times the truth as been used as a weapon of destruction by taking the sword of the word of God and use it against one another. Truth is to be spoken in love for the purpose of maturity, healing and medicine for the wounded soul. Many have used the truth in unrighteousness to divide, destroy and bring down one another. Truth should be used to buildup and encourage one another. We will see the grace of God in operation, the gifts working together to build the kingdom of God. Love is the ground, foundation, habitation and reason. Love is the motivation, the goal that unifies us. Therefore specking the truth in love causes growth, and maturity.
We together abiding in the truth must in the bond of love build so that we may grow up together in Christ in all things. The truth from within will cause Christ to dwell in our hearts. Being rooted and grounded in love this truth will cause the believer to be filled with the fullness of God. In this truth we shall raise up in the knowledge of his perfect will. We shall preach the gospel to the poor, strengthen the weak hands and confirm the feeble knees, the eyes of the blind shall be opened; the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. We shall also lay down one day in the dust of the earth, only to be raise from the dust of the earth in the likeness of Christ. We shall know him and we shall be just like Jesus. As he has loved us so shall we love him.
If we continue to abide in the truth of the Gospel we will see the manifestation of power by the Spirit of Unity. Many who have sat idle for many years God will use for his glory. Every member of the body of Christ is to be equipped with the truth to reach out and serve others. In the wisdom and knowledge of God we can be light to a world of darkness.
