Lamentations 3:22-24 New King James Version (NKJV)

22 Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed,

Because His compassions fail not.

23 They are new every morning;

Great is Your faithfulness.

24 “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,

“Therefore I hope in Him!”

I am shamelessly pilfering something my friend Alan posted on Facebook that seems to fit very well with today's text.  I do not have to give him credit because he says he pilfered it as well.  I read through it, and it almost seems as if it would fit in the prophet Jeremiah's Lamentations.

Me: Hey God.

God: Hello.....

Me: I'm falling apart. Can you put me back together?

God: I would rather not.

Me: Why?

God: Because you aren't a puzzle.

Me: What about all of the pieces of my life that are falling down onto the ground?

God: Let them stay there for a while. They fell off for a reason. Take some time and decide if you need any of those pieces back.

Me: You don't understand! I'm breaking down!

God: No - you don't understand. You are breaking through. What you are feeling are just growing pains. You are shedding the things and the people in your life that are holding you back. You aren't falling apart. You are falling into place. Relax. Take some deep breaths and allow those things you don't need any more to fall off of you. Quit holding onto the pieces that don't fit you anymore. Let them fall off. Let them go.

Me: Once I start doing that, what will be left of me?

God: Only the very best pieces of you.

Me: I'm scared of changing.

God: I keep telling you - YOU AREN'T CHANGING!! YOU ARE BECOMING!

Me: Becoming who?

God: Becoming who I created you to be! A person of light and love and charity and hope and courage and joy and mercy and grace and compassion. I made you for more than the shallow pieces you have decided to adorn yourself with that you cling to with such greed and fear. Let those things fall off of you. I love you! Don't change! ... Become! Become! Become who I made you to be. I'm going to keep telling you this until you remember it.

Me: There goes another piece.

God: Yep. Let it be.

Me: So ... I'm not broken?

God: Of course Not! - but you are breaking like the dawn. It's a new day. Become!!!

Have you lost some things through this period of imposed isolation?  When and if things return to whatever the new normal looks like, do we need to pick back up all the stuff we had to put down to observe the forced isolation and idleness?  Relationships worth retaining will still be viable.  Those that were merely convenient may not resume, even though we enjoyed them.  Were they helping us to be and become?  Or did they hold us back?

A praise report:  my coworker who tested positive for C-19 has gotten a follow up that shows that she has overcome the virus.

Father teach me to see more clearly what You are working to produce in me in this season.  More importantly, whether I ever see with understanding, teach me to trust that You are always working for my good, and that You are not merely helping me to be, but to become.  As the green cover of a flower bud conceals the beauty that is waiting to emerge, so too are some of the things I have valued in my life also temporary.  Teach me that even the flower I find beautiful enough to prize serves a purpose other than merely my appreciation, and that it too is temporary.  Teach me to trust You to allow things to fall away, and that not all loss is detrimental.  Forgive my tantrums when things seem difficult.  Forgive the lack of trust my complaining reveals.  Thank You that You are more patient as a parent than I am.  I purpose to be a person of praise even when I think things are challenging.  May I declare with the Apostle Paul: For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. [Rom. 8:18]  I ask for today's portion of Your Holy Spirit.  Even as You fed Israel in the wilderness with manna, feed me with the bread of heaven from Your Word.  May the Holy Spirit be my interpreter of what I find there.  Please nurture me with the truth and power Your Word contains.  May it fill my meditations.  May it guide my words.  May it give me strength to act.  In the name of Jesus, may these things be true in me.
