Proverbs 16:33 - - -
"The lot is cast into the lap,
But its every decision is from the LORD."
In biblical times, casting lots was done in order to know the will of God. It was used in determining a course of action, to discover the guilty, to select officials, and also in numerous other instances. One good example in the Old testament, which we can have, is when Jonah's fellow sailors wanted to find out who was responsible for the terrible storms they had. In order to find out who, they cast lots. And the lot pointed to Jonah (Jonah 1:7). We need to remember that every time the casting of lots was used, the Israelites depended on the Lord 100% to reveal to them His will. It was an impartial way to find God's will when choices had to occur.
Today, gone are the days of throwing dice or stones to know what decisions to make. However the concept of finding the will of God remains to be an important factor. In all our decisions we should impartially depend on God and search for His will. God has given us His indwelling Holy Spirit who enables us now to have direct access to inquire of the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:9-16). Occasionally, the Spirit may put specific directions in our minds, so clearly and specifically that we are confident these are from Him. For a major life decision, however, it is wise to confirm our guidance by inquiring into what the Bible says about it and also through the counsel of our trusted Christian leaders.
Waiting for the Lord to answer sometimes may take a while. This calls for patience, trust, and continued waiting on the Lord. Anyway, anything that comes from the Lord is worth waiting for
