We are commanded by our Lord and Savor to love one another. He has given us an example and a command to continue in the same manner of Love that he has shown toward us. As we continue to walk in this love, we discover the greatness of his love in friendship.
John 15:13 “Greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends”. To lay down one’s life is to live a life of sacrificial giving. As we give to one another we learn to live. We learn to lay down the selfish life for our friends, this is true greatness.
God commands us” to be Holy for I am Holy”. He wants us to be holy in all manner of life. So, our friendships must be sanctified relationships. God requires pure, clean and Christ-like relationships in the eyes of man and God. 2 Cor.6:14 “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers”. The words “yoked together” deals with the union of two or more people the union is commanded by God to be in holiness. The unholy communion of friends will come to nothing but sin, no matter how strong you may feel you are spiritually. The influence of a friend has a way of building up or tearing down mind, soul and body. Therefore, let us chose sanctified friendships that will encourage us to live in holiness and inspire us to love one another.
There is greatness in love and friendship when hearts and minds commune in the love of Christ. Even Jesus calls each of us to a higher relationship, for he has said “henceforth I call you not servant …….but I have called you friends” John15:15. Because we know his word we have divine fellowship with God. If we do whatsoever he commands, Jesus says that we are his friends.
Jesus has chosen to love us has friends. We did not choose him but “he was despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrow, acquainted with grief: We hid has it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not”. And yet, Jesus has chosen to love us has friends. This is the greatness of love because Jesus says you are my friends.
Jesus said “I have chosen you and I ordain you”. With this friendship there is a new level of intimacy. The greatness of his love in friendship is that he gives to you power to bring forth fruit and that your fruit remain. Power so great that whatever you ask in the name of this loving friend Jesus, you know that the father will give it to you.
There is greatness of love in friendship because his love draws us together and brings us to a manner of life that gives unselfishly. The spirit of his love fills us in such a way that we give in the greatness of his love. We lay down our lives, when we love one another. There is no sacrifice to great. This is true greatness of love in friendship.
