J.S. Romanides

Hello there anyone, I have taken a real liken to some of the Orthodox teachings, in fact, I have found more freedom from sin  through some of their teachings, than 20 years of struggling under the junk of Augustine. I have a book called 'Christus Victor', which is a historical look at the doctrine of the attonement. I have been reading various writings by Orthodox writers, of which J.S.Romanides is one. I have been interested in a book called 'The Ancestral sin', by J.S.Romanides. Can anyone shed any light on this book, and is it worth getting??(I think I already know the answer)    Marcus, from sunny Ireland

Welcome to Christianity free of undue Augustinian influence!  I understand that Ireland was quite correct in its theology prior to the Great Schism.

I have heard of Romanides, but have not ever read him.  If you read this book, let us know what you think. 

It is so hard in American society (where I live) to go beyond the Augustinian idea of original sin that it is hard to think outside that box, so maybe I will read that book too.!

  Thanks for the reply. Yes we have a good heritage concerning spreading the Gospel, but the fly in the ointment is that old reformed faith(Augustianism), It stinks my nostrils! I think Augustinianism translated into english means 'death'! Chat to you soon.   Marcus

Romanides' book is well worth getting.  You may have to sort through some strong anti-Western stuff, but the core of it is solid.  I highly recommend the book.

Another excellent one is Mary: The Untrodden Portal of God, by George Gabriel.

Sopko, Andrew J. Prophet of Roman Orthodoxy: The Theology of John Romanides (Dewdney, B.C.: Synaxis Press, 2003).
