When someone tells you they are going to commit suicide...
« on: October 16, 2006, 09:45:50 PM »
When someone confides in you they are going ot commit suicide, what do you do?  Legally what are you supposed to do?

Tonight, on my way home from the hospital in Tulsa, I got a call from someone who has attempted suicide twice in the last three weeks, and came real close both times.  One time he was life-flighted out to another hospital, another time he was already blue before EMS found him lying in his yard.

Tonight, he called me to tell me there was nothing I could do and he would be dead by the time I returned to town.  When I hung up I called the police and told them they needed to find some reason to arrest him to keep him alive and told him of the suicide threat.  What would you do in a situation like that?

Have you ever had anyone you were counseling commit suicide?  How did that affect you?  Have you ever had anyone involuntarily committed in order to protect their own life?  I just want to know what I should do.

Thanks,

Kevin
He was despised and forsaken of men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; like one from whom men hide their face; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.  Surely our griefs He Himself bore, and our sorrows He carried; yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.  But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed.

Both eventualities.

Being a therapist, I am legally mandated to do whatever I think is appropriate to keep someone from hurting themselves, including having them transported to the local hospital. I have also had the sheriff conduct safety checks on clients.

I don't have to do this very often; about once or twice a year.

It's a tough call, but I always ask some questions to know how serious the threat is. (Just mentioning the thought of committing suicide is a 3 on a scale of 1-10 in my book)

Do you know when you are going to do it?

Do you know where you are going to do it?

Do you know how you are going to do it?

Do you know why you are going to do it?

Thankfully in my experience the people I have talked to have just thought about it but didn't have any of the details worked out. I know that it is serious but I have had times in my life that I have contemplated it but never enough to work out any details.

Another rather important question is "Are you going to do it?"

Or, "Can you tell me you do not intend to do it after you leave here?"

The criteria for calling the cops/ambulance include:

a. Workable plan
b. Available means
c. Immediate intent

Which is what I heard last night.  They found him unconscious and he would have soon been dead without intervention by EMTs.

Good Point.  I'll add it to my list of questions, Thanks.

Thanks Kalen.  He is now in a mental health facility.  I went to visit him yesterday and it is amazing the change in him when he has no drugs and no alcohol in his system.

I didn't even think he would remember calling me that night, but he told me he knew it was me who had the police come by to check on him, but he told me he didn't mind me calling the police.  When they arrived they found him unconscious laying on the ground in his shed with a narcotic patch in his mouth and tons of alcohol in his system.  Another few minutes and he would have been gone.

Yes, his phone call was a cry for help, perhaps the only part of him that was aware of what he was doing to himself and how harmful it was.  I'm glad you did something to help him out.
