Are pets really friends?

I love my dog. And since he's a mammal, he can feel and show affection. We have fun together. He's always happy when I get home. He defends me even when I'm not in real danger. He's a good listener. And we hang out a lot.

Is he a friend based on the meaning of the word? Or does a "real" friend have to be a human?

Oh, I don’t know, can a Boa or Python be a friend?

I had a German shepherd for 15 years, since she was a puppy, she was my best friend.

Snakes can't show or feel affection and neither can other reptiles. They truly are cold blooded creatures. Dogs and many other mammals can feel affection, a type of love, worry about those they 'love' and enjoy company.

That is pure speculation.  How do you know what goes on inside a reptile's mind?

I submit that only God knows what they think or feel. He made them.

I have had 7 rescue dogs in my life, and all of them were my friends. Obviously animal friends are different from human ones, but are very precious. We can learn such a lot from dogs, with reference to trust, contentment, faithfullness and enjoying the simple things in life.

Sorry - but they do not have split hooves or chew cud. IOW, they do not fit any biblical definition of the word "food."

I would put them in the same category as "rat."

Since I do not follow Jewish dietary laws, I find them to be quite tasty.  See Acts 11, verse 6 in particular.

My cats are my best friends...they are part of my life and I love them...I am sure they love me back...

I had a parrot that I taught to say "You're my best friend".  But when I'd leave he used to talk behind my back. So dogs may be your friend, but parrots are just posers.

My parrot likes to snuggle and shows her appreciation by regurgitating her food for me. I always pass, but it's the thought that counts.

I don't know about all "pets", but I do believe dogs can be.  There's a special relationship between humans and dogs.

Parrots, like cats, are evil.

My best friend has a parrot.  If I walk in with long sleeves on, she loves me and wants to come talk to me.  If I walk in with short sleeves and my tattoos showing, she tries to eat them.

And cats just attack my face at 2 in the morning while I'm asleep.  Not just A cat, ALL of them.  Every cat that I have ever slept in the same house as has tried to murder me in my sleep.

My dog just tries to steal my pillows.  I can tolerate that though.
